"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." as writes James in the book of James (4:6).

In short, humility has its special rewards.

Alex Haley, the author of Roots, had a picture in his office depicting a turtle sitting atop a fence. The picture was there to remind him of a lesson he had learned many years before:

If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he had some help.

Haley said, "Every time I write something significant, and begin to feel proud of myself, I look at the turtle on top of that fence post and remind myself that just like him, I didn't get here by my own efforts alone.

We both had some help. "

God knew from the beginning how prone we are to wander away from Him when we are successful, so He had Moses warn the Israelites before they entered the land of Canaan….of the penalties of pride.

And, of course, it is the same old warning that man has been getting...and ignoring…for all these centuries since; with prosperity must come the wisdom of humility or else God is diminished in the pride of possessions.
Deut. 8:11-14 warns us, Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.  Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God...

The famous inventor Samuel Morse was once asked if he ever encountered situations where he didn't know what to do.

Morse responded, "More than once.  And whenever I cannot see my way clearly, I kneel down and pray to

God for light and understanding."

Morse received many honors from his invention of the telegraph but felt undeserving: "I have made a valuable application of electricity... not because I am superior to other men… but solely because God, who meant it for all mankind, had to reveal it to someone and He was pleased to reveal it to me."

Luke 14:11  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

You see... the world says one ascends into greatness, but the Bible reveals that one descends into greatness.

It's a hard lesson to learn...and that is why Jesus kept repeating himself in teaching it, "Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
