A rather crude and cruel experiment was carried out by Emperor Frederick, who ruled the Roman Empire in the thirteenth century.

He wanted to know what man’s original language was: Hebrew, Greek, or Latin? He decided to isolate a few infants from the sound of the human voice.

He reasoned that they would eventually speak the natural tongue of man.

Wet nurses who were sworn to absolute silence were obtained, and though it was difficult for them, they abided by the rule.

The infants never heard a word -- not a sound from a human voice. Within several months they were all dead.

We need relationships...we do not need conflicts that destroy relationships...in any language.

Therefore what must we all do and always...is...follow some basic rules that common sense and the Bible have laid out for us...for after all we are brothers and sisters in Christ...and if we act like it...half the battle is won.

       To begin with...

If we hear a tainted tale about someone don't spread it...rather...

        THINK...spelled

T...is it true?

H...is it helpful?

I...is it inspiring?

N...is it necessary that we spread the story?

K...is it kind?

Their names were James and Paul and they could hardly have been any more different in their thinking.

They both loved the Lord...after that it was all downhill.

Then they did what all followers of Christ ought to always automatically do...as brothers in Christ they agreed to magnify what they had in common rather than what they disagreed on.

They could have enlarged their anger and destroyed their common sense. ...but they didn't.
In Jerusalem there was much more pressure to conform to the laws of Moses than in Antioch.

In a Gentile city, people came to Christ from a different perspective and tradition.
So what did these men of God do?

They let each congregation work out its own practices according to the principles of Christ’s grace, love and truth as each saw it.

And so they prospered and their churches prospered...as consensus won out over conflict.

Again...what did they do?... they agreed to magnify what they had in common rather than what they disagreed on.

What do you want from Jesus?  Let me share with you what I believe you should want.

You should want Him to shake you up enough so that three things happen:

first - that you finally
       believe He can change you,

secondly – that you want to change, and

third - that you accept the forgiveness

that He freely offers.  The number of people who believe in His forgiveness but can’t accept this fact is legion.

As our scripture reads “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

What shall you be called if you are a Peace-breaker?

Well, Proverbs 14:17 gives a pretty good reason to be a Peacemaker rather than Peacebreaker … "A quick-tempered man does foolish things."  And who wants to be called an angry fool?

With such careless ease we say, “I lost my temper.”  But have you ever stopped to think of the implications behind that phrase.  Lose it often enough and the results can be disastrous; for that is the way people lose their spouses and jobs and health and opportunities and...the list is long.

Some very educated people claim that venting our anger, in controlled circumstances of course, is a satisfactory method to finding and keeping our “cool.”  But I tend to agree more with Neil Warren, who in his book, “Make Anger Your Ally,” suggests that people ought to sit down and think about the things that make them angry, and then write them down.  Certainly not act them out.

Read what you’ve written once a week for six months and during that time, keep asking yourself these probing questions: “Do I enjoy getting angry?  Do I actually enjoy intimidating people?”

And if you get what you want, there is another question you must seriously ask yourself:  But at what a cost?  At what a cost!

If you’re thinking six months for at least some improvement! That’s too long a time – Do this...and you'll dilly and dally until your vow or your dream or your goal or your mission will have died from unuse.

You should want results sooner than that!  No, that is not too long a time, for most of our bad, angry habits took a long time growing and they will probably take a long time to shrink.

One thing is for sure, if you are an angry person and you don't, or won't, admit it, you certainly are not going to do anything about it to improve.

ARROGANCE AND HUMILITY (Continuation of Series)

If you were asked, "What is the most important discovery or accomplishment in your life? " how would you answer the question?

In the year 1847, a doctor from Edinburgh, Sir James Simpson, discovered that chloroform could be used as an anesthetic to render people insensible to the pain of surgery.

From those early experiments, Dr. Simpson made it possible for people to go through the most dangerous operations without fear of pain and suffering.  His was one of the most significant discoveries of modern medicine.

But some years later, while lecturing at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Simpson was asked by one of his students, "What do you consider to be the most valuable discovery of your lifetime? "

To the surprise of his students, who had expected him to refer to chloroform, Dr. Simpson replied, "My most valuable discovery was when I discovered myself a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Saviour."

What great a favor humility can do to and for society.  How?  It encourages co-operation and respect for other human beings.

A prime example of a humble person is Nelson Mandela. This was a man who suffered almost 30 years of imprisonment for the cause he supported.

On his elevation to the Presidency of South Africa in 1994, Mandela said, "I stand before you filled with deep pride and joy:  pride in the ordinary, humble people of this country - you have shown such a calm, patient determination to reclaim this country as your own; and joy that we can loudly proclaim from the rooftops - Free at last!"

This speech was absolutely filled with humility.  Words spoken by a man who thought only of the people;  fought beside them, shared their fate and did not seek to rise above them, but stayed one of them.

Mandela's humility brought him world-wide acclaim; placing him alongside the likes of Mother Theresa and Ghandi.

Humility shakes the hands of the homeless rather than cast in his or her direction a look of disdain.

Allow me to ask a question, please.  When and if  homeless man or woman comes to  your worship service on a Sunday morn, and then goes back to the Fellowship Hall afterwards to join for lunch.

Do you walk over and give a verbal welcome?   Or shake his or her hand?

Or do you just gravitate to friends - the old comfort zone, you know?

Ah yes, it’s well to remember the story about the little girl who questioned her wealthy father praying to God to help his neighbor by saying, "But daddy, you can help himself yourself."

Humility practices the compassion of listening, even to a fool.  And if his comments are not hurting anyone, allowing him to walk away feeling he is wise.

Humility is not easily practiced nor easily kept for pride constantly looks for an opportunity to stamp on it and crush it into the ground.  But seek it consistently for without it there is the chance you will become a slave to your pride.  And in so doing, become a consummate bore with a prickly presence.

Do you want from Jesus all the joy that can be gained from fully accepting the fact that you are truly the child of a King?  So that when you die you will not have to ask that someone write on your tombstone, “Born a human being, died a question mark.”

Many years ago there was a movie called RED SHOES.  The story line deals with a girl totally dedicated to dancing.  Early in the film she goes to a master teacher and before he will take her as a student he asks, “And why do you wish to dance?”

Without a moments hesitation she replies, “Why do you want to live?”

What should you want from Jesus?  That you not have so much to live with you forget what to live for.

We all pray for peace and power; pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to move within.  And that’s a wow prayer…in particular because the Greek word in the New Testament for power means dynamite.  So yes, when you pray to Jesus and list your wants, put the power of the Holy Spirit at the top of the list.  It can truly blow your mind.

What do you want from Jesus?  A life guided by faith rather than by fear, I would imagine.  David put it well in case you can’t find the proper words  “Though an army besiege me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, even then will I be confident. (Psalm 27:3)

Phillip Brooks, the great preacher said, “Do not pray for easy lives.  Pray to be stronger men and women!  Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers but rather pray for powers equal to your tasks.”

What do you want from Jesus?

It all really comes down to the question, “Who is this Jesus?”  Well, I suppose the old hymn “What a Friend we have in Jesus” spells it out pretty well.  Because a true friend is a true friend 24 hours a day.  Loves us and supports us no matter what.  Forgives us.  And yes, a true friend would even give their life for us.  That’s what’s so great about Jesus.

And when you pray to Jesus always remember that He never said, “I’ll show you the way.”  Rather He said, “I am the way.”

Then having accepted that Jesus is the Son of God, remember how He got even more specific, “…apart from Me you can do nothing.”  Well, since He stands before the throne of grace ready to argue for your salvation, I believe we can give a resounding “Yes!”

At an afternoon tea for officers and their wives, the Commanding General stood up to speak.  An hour later he was still rambling on and on.  A lieutenant who by then could hardly keep his eyes open turned to the woman at his side and commented, “How long is that unbearable old windbag going to keep talking?”

“Do you know who I am?” asked the woman.

“No, I don’t,” replied the officer.

“I am the wife of that unbearable old windbag?”

“Do you know who I am?” countered the Lieutenant, rapidly growing red in the face.

“No, I don’t,” replied the woman.

“Thank God,” answered the young lieutenant and melted into the crowd.

Thank God, and that is a prayer, that Jesus does know who you are, and loves you and forgives you  and does not want you to melt into the crowd that ignored Him at the cross.

Sometimes it is good not to be known.  When it comes to Jesus, it’s the other way around.

A father of three won a shouting contest with a roar louder than a passing train. "If you want a war, you go!" Yoshihiko Kato shouted. The sound meter registered 115.8 decibels, louder than the racket of a train passing overhead on an elevated railroad. For that winning shout, Kato won the $750 grand prize of the 10th annual Halls Year-End Loud Voice Contest. Kato admitted that he probably built up his loud voice shouting at his children.

Now don’t misunderstand me.  Anger is a legitimate and often useful emotion.  Remember the Bible does not say Love is never provoked or angered...rather it says Love is not easily provoke or angered.

So, you can grow angry at stupidity - and then work to improve an educational program - but not by showing up at a PTA meeting and shouting at the top of your lungs.

You can grow angry at corporate greed or congressional incompetence - and form voting blocks and surround yourself with intelligent individuals who come with solutions rather than angry loudmouthed sarcasm.

But we human beings don’t have a very good track record when it comes to peace.   Just look at the fact that during the 4000 years of recorded history, only 300 of those recorded years have been without a major war.

Indeed, someone has said that peace is merely that brief, glorious, moment in history when everyone stops to reload their weapons.

And right now, America is badly in need of Peacemakers for we are NOT overwhelmed with patience or self discipline.  Which is why, even families and friends can and do become dangerous enemies.

Are you aware that half of the murders in America are committed by people who know the victim?  And that millions of wives are beaten by their husbands and that even more children are beaten by their parents to the point of abuse?

Often these are not bad people, but their horrendous actions occur simply because they just do not know how to control their anger.

And give many people the choice between reconciliation and recrimination and we know what too many will choose.

The Bible certainly doesn’t ignore the fact that anger is just one letter short of being danger.  Indeed, it is mentioned 262 times inside these holy pages.

A question?  Have you ever taken the time to analyze what makes you the angriest the quickest?

If you do lack temper control, I suggest you make a list and keep on checking it until you have reached the point where you can admit that too often it really isn't all the other people who are making you mad but you letting yourself get mad.  Perhaps someone daring to disagree with you, or having the nerve to offer you advice?  If this is your Achilles heel, face it as a weakness you have to work on and then work on it.  It won't go away all by itself.

Along about now some of you have already started shutting down.  You’re thinking, he’s stopped preaching and he's gone to meddling.  Your parade of excuses is becoming a battalion.

Well, since confession is good for the soul, I have to admit I have been known in the past to have a short fuse. I’ve had to work on my temper from the git go.  What has helped me the most are my deep, and on-going prayers about it.  So God worked on me, lengthened the fuse and strengthened the man.

Over the years I’ve made some real and definite progress, until now I think I can honestly say I am a patient, impatient man.  I've come a long ways, but I’ve still got a ways to go.

Also, part of my improvement is due to applying plain old common sense.

Think about it this way.  Are you one of those people who says, "I try…but I just can't control my anger."

Really?  Don’t you control it when talking with your boss?  You don't want to get fired so then I guess you can control it...wouldn’t you say?

You’ve started an argument with your wife, husband or child and the front door bell rings.  You answer the front door and you are the epitome of patience.  Then I guess you can control your anger, wouldn't you say?

Yes, anger can be controlled...you just have to give yourself good enough reasons to at least get angry less and less.
