Life is what we are alive to. For some, life is only shifty deals and a fast buck. It is all they are alive to.

For some, life is only backyard gossip, petty fights, and boredom in the suburbs. It is all they are alive to. For some life is an ongoing ego trip.

For some, life is accepting the challenge of betterment and working at making their selves just that. Not perfect but certainly better than they were yesterday.

Which begs the question, what is your life alive to? In the private recesses of your mind and soul, what turns you on or turns you off?

It is one of my favorite quotes and I wish I knew who wrote it.

“Within my earthly temple there’s a crowd,
There’s one of us that’s humble, one that’s proud.
There’s one that’s broken-hearted for his sins,
There’s one who unrepentant sits and grins;
There’s one who loves his neighbor as he loves himself.
There’s one who cares for naught but fame and self.
From such corroding care I should be free,
If once I could determine which is me.

What was our scripture for this morning? “It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth and behold he eateth but he awaketh and his soul is empty.” (Isaiah 23:8)

“Do you enjoy visiting friends? More than likely you’re thinking, Preacher, of course, I do.
Now let me ask the other side of the coin - Do you enjoy visiting enemies? No
?

Well, I know you must enjoy visiting at least one enemy because, like myself, you probably visit this one quite often. Unfortunately, we all …visit this enemy…whose name is anger.

Some visit anger seldom . Some on a regular basis. And during those visits, some spew and others stew.”

BECOME LIKE LITTLE CHILDREN (1ST IN SERIES)

******************************

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

*****************************

Matt 18:3 And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

As the train sped through the countryside and the little girl could not contain her excitement.

She bounced up and down and then ran from one side of the train to the other exclaiming about what she was seeing, “Look mother, there’s a cow.” “Look mother, there’s a river.” “Look mother, look at the sheep.”

Finally, her mother became so embarrassed she turned to the man seated across the aisle and said, “You know, she still thinks everything is wonderful.”

World War destroyed a great deal of London. Air raids and searchlights and bombs falling became a part of every day.

So one evening as a mother, father and their little boy and daughter sat on their porch on the outskirts of London they heard the roar of approaching aircraft.

They all bolted down the street toward an Air Raid shelter and just made it through the opening when the bombs began to burst all around them.

When the air raid siren announced that the raid was over they came back out to find almost total destruction all around them.

Indeed their own home was now nothing but blackened ruins. The parents sat down and wept. The little boy just stood and looked up into the sky.

Finally the father asked, “What are you do doing Johnny?” And the little boy simply replied, “I’m watching God hang out the stars.”

INTRODUCTION (Repeated for those new to the series)

In an old loose leaf notebook, Thomas Kettering wrote when there was a cry from his heart. He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step.

***************************************

Morning

I have been challenged. While I have survived , the thin line between death and survival is now very real. It does something to one’s thinking. My list of priorities is like a house of blocks, all fallen down and opened out in disarray. Not that I mind very much. The old order was not so great, just comfortable. It was a long time building and sacrosanct with age.

“I don’t know how much I can change,” I said to the doctor.

“Write that statement on the blackboard one hundred and fifty times and stay after school an hour, “Dr. Conway replied. (He has quickly learned I enjoy a sense of humor.) But seriously, Tom, you will have to change.”

“I’m not being stubborn. I’m being me, and I’m afraid.”

“I can certainly understand that. But your recovery, to whatever extent, now depends more on your ability to change than on any medication I can prescribe.”

Once again my life is back in my hands. I’m almost in control – and in comes the nurse again with the same little cup and the same little pills and the same inane questions.

“How are we feeling today? Relax, Mr. Kettering, we can’t get well if we stay tense, can we?”

We? I had the heart attack. But I don’t say it. I don’t want to antagonize her. She has a love affair with efficiency and I need that efficiency. We have the tightest sheets in the hospital. We take our pills and bath and meals on the strictest schedule. With her considerable help and my considerable complaints we are recovering.

To be continued next Tuesday

Below is a quote from Thursday Jan 20th Wyrick’s writings blog entitled ANGER VS. PATIENCE

“After the old man had departed, God called out to Abraham and asked where the stranger was. Abraham replied, “I sent him on his way because he did not worship you.”

God answered “I have suffered him all his eighty years although he dishonors me. Could you not endure for just one night?”

God suffers us, endures us! And forgives us and loves us and sets such a perfect example for us.”

We all know people that we think the world might be better off without, or at least our own personal world.

They are experts in the art of making everyone around them unhappy. That is after they have succeeded in making themselves unhappy.

They hardly qualify as love objects.

Fact of the matter, they’re a pain.

And then along comes the Master Teacher from the Hallowed Teaching Halls of heaven and orders, “Love others like you love yourself.”

And you may sometimes feel like responding, “Can I please trade that commandment in for one that is easier to follow?”

But one of the over-riding themes of the Apostle Paul is that we should “Carry each others burdens.”

Some people, because they have experienced a lot of pain - mentally, physically, emotionally, find that being nasty comes easy and being nice comes hard.

They’ve been hurt so many times they have become past masters at hurting back.

So, when someone is giving you a hard time, remember that often it isn’t personal. You are just a substitute for the real thing. And if it is personal? Be nice anyway. You might just change their way of thinking.

DEPRESSION…THE ALIEN WITHIN (3rd in series)

************************************

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

***********************************

I was a young seminary student on my way back to school from spending the weekend with my parents and seeing a car pulled awkwardly to the side of the road.

I had stopped to see if I could help.

I found out that the man had just had a heart attack
and died behind the wheel.

It was over 50 years ago, but I still remember that as I drove the distraught widow to her home later that afternoon, I listened over and over again to her litany of regret.

Clasping and unclasping her hands she wept, “What if we just hadn’t gone out for a drive…” “What if…” she repeated, as if by saying it enough times it would make things better. Of course, it didn’t. It all only made things worse.

And she was playing the WHAT IF game? And many do…and it seems to come as second nature…and it the worst thing to do…unless you began to play a positive WHAT IF game…such as in this case…WHAT IF I HAD NEVER MET HIM OR HER…look at all the precious moments I would have lost…and yes…pain at such moments is the price we pay for the gift of love given many years before and during all those years together.

Time. It does slowly heal. Turns wounds into scars. Improves perspective. But, yes, sometimes we still need to be able to take Prozac, or Effexor or Paxil without a sense of guilt.

And why not?

Do not most people take insulin for diabetes, or aspirin for a headache, or anesthesia for an operation?

Certainly God can cure cancer, but does that mean one should not take chemotherapy? Sometimes a minister or psychiatrist needs to continue to be seen.

And again. why not?
Don’t most people continue to see a doctor if physical hurts persist? Should emotions receive less concern and care?

And oh what foolishness we proclaim if we turn to someone who is down and say, “Stiff upper lip ole boy or ole gal. A stiff upper lip you know,” … not only stupid, it is thoughtless.

To the depressed person, part of that depression is a racing, tumbling time of broken-hearted thoughts bouncing off the soul, and trying to slow it all down immediately is like trying to stop a speeding car with tissue paper.

Therefore, sometimes the best thing do, if depression descends on you, is for a little while to try to wipe clean the slate of your worried mind.

To give such thoughts some muted silence.

Seek an emotional whiteout. Just let the soft breeze of nothingness blow for a while.

And then, read John 14:27 and hear Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Afternoon

I grow breathless just lying still. My limbs are set in concrete and my mind in less than neutral. There is a limpness to my resolution but Dr. Conway assures me that my physical and mental recovery will take place, even though slowly. He can make no promises about the destination, however.

I write in past, present and future tenses, but of what use are tenses when time is a slow whirlwind trying to make sense of itself?

First, I was afraid of death. Now I’m afraid I may go into permanent low gear. I’ve sprinted all my life. Full throttle and forward thrust. As long as I can remember, even my dreams have been action-filled additions to my waking hours. My heart attack is no prize to be won at the end of a race. The end? No, not yet!

I simply need to turn my one-hundred-yard-dash into a marathon. Not a stopping, just a slowing down, an easing off. There’s less blur that way and maybe I’ll see more clearly where I am. Maybe I’ll even take a second look at people and things instead of always rushing on.

“Where have you been, Thomas Kettering? I have hardly an answer for my inner voice. I never really paused to see.”

“How do you feel, dad?” My son. It was a pleasure to see him.

“You look so much better today,” Nancy said. I don’t know how much better I really looked but she seemed glad as she said it. Maybe our battered love is not yet completely smashed.

“ Where’s Connie?” But then I remembered. Nancy had explained about the school choir trip and I had said there was no reason for her not to go. “I’m getting along all right. She’s worked so hard to make it, don’t let her miss the opportunity.”

With a gentle smile Nancy had replied, “Thank you, Tom.”

SOME more THOUGHTS ON LONELINESS

Loneliness can sometimes be such a good and persistent teacher if we let it make us ask some hard questions of ourselves:

“Have I pinched my personality in to a mean and meager thing so that it has driven my friends away?’

“Have I laughed in the face of God so often that now I weep in the face of reality?”

“Have I repented of my sins so that now they are fewer, or repeated them again and again till now they are more?”

To lessen the chance that loneliness will assault us we need in our relationships with people to exhibit a willingness to go the extra mile. To stretch our heart strings so that when they are plucked they will give a higher, purer tone.

And if we brought on our own loneliness from God by playing the role of Prodigal Son then we must do the obvious…pray and put one foot after the other in the direction of that God.

If leaving for too long produces loneliness then returning surely bring joy, like the biblical Prodigal.

Loneliness is the result of a one-way street in the game of hide and don’t seek me right now that people sometimes play with their creator. But you want to know something really great?

God keeps on seeking anyway. Seeks when a person is determined not to be found. Seeks when a person is weak-willed and drifting. Seeks until it is a two way street and the traffic is going in both directions, from God to us and from us to God.

All human beings are lonely for God, whether they admit or understand it. They really are!

DEPRESSION…THE ALIEN WITHIN (2nd in series)

*****************************************

*****************************************

We are all different and some see life through rose colored glasses and others spend most of their time misplacing them. But be that has it may, chasing new avenues to give yourself new outlooks is certainly better than watching nothing but miserable reruns of bad emotions.

The mind is strange – it can concentrate on only one thing at a time, so while you are focusing on something good, it is almost impossible to think on something bad.

There are things that help, so work on them. Picture Jesus, make a mental image of heaven – think creation and glory in a tinkling brook or the sound of a whippoorwill. Pick your own images and let the best in your life override the worst.

How to ease such an attack of depression...
attack it with some silly thoughts such as:
1) popping some popcorn without a lid on or
2) making a list of things to do you’ve
already done or
3) reading the dictionary upside down
and then looking for hidden meanings or
4) making up a new language and then
using it to ask for directions.

This kind of thing isn’t a solution.

It’s really only a band-aide, but band-aides have their place too in the healing of wounds. Well, actually you probably won’t do any of them, but perhaps you got a laugh at just the suggestions, and laughter is a healer.

But sometimes, if you actually force yourself to do something ridiculous it may help a little.

C. K. Chesterton once wrote, “If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars.”

RUST ON MY SOUL (A Novel) (Published by Bridge Press in 1985 & Distributed Internationally) (A new Series that began on Tues April 13th and will continue every Tuesday thereafter until finished) (Thursday & Sunday will continue to cover a variety of subjects as in the past)

Morning

These laborings will be my link with the outside world. A world where men write, read, work, live

“How do you feel, Tom?” Were they afraid that my body would grow stale? Why else would they wrap me in cellophane?

Nancy was looking down at me through the cloudy world beyond my oxygen tent. It was the first time I had been aware of her presence.

I have no solid recollections of the time between, except of pain and floating and disjointed scenes. A white mist moving quietly around the room, a male voice breaking through my rattled consciousness for a fleeting moment, the sharp sting of a needle…

“Don’t pity me, Nancy. You haven’t given me love for too long a time. Don’t give me pity!”

The mental image of a physical cripple scared these fighting, angry thoughts into my senses. But I was too weak to reply with more than a faint excuse of a smile.

Nausea. It pushed in. It pulsed out. Oh, God, I was afraid. Had I watered the wrong fields? Harvested the wrong crops? Was nothing facing me now but a perpetual winter called death?

I was all sag and sedative, courtesy of the little white cop and Pandora-offering of pills. Life became a wet mop, all heavy and shapeless and lumpy.

The only clear-cut corners were the meals and hypodermic needles and the tubes – the portable plumbing. My mental capacities had all the decisiveness of slush.

A HEAVENLY CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM(1st in series) (on this Wyrck’s Writing blog)

It began Sunday Dec 26, 2010

“I have always been intrigued by a question God put to Adam, “Where are you?” Why did He ask that? What is the meaning behind this? It wasn’t a geographical question, for certainly God knew the answer to that one.

BELOW IS A QUOTE FROM A NEW SERIES on this Wyrick’s Writings site entitled ANGER IS A KILLER. It began Thursday January 6, 2010.

“Do you enjoy visiting friends? More than likely you’re thinking, Preacher, of course, I do.
Now let me ask the other side of the coin - Do you enjoy visiting enemies? No?

Well, I know you must enjoy visiting at least one enemy because, like myself, you probably visit this one quite often. Unfortunately, we all …visit this enemy…whose name is anger.

Some visit anger seldom . Some on a regular basis. And during those visits, some spew and others stew.”

SOME THOUGHTS ON LONELINESS

We all need each other, but we need each other at our best.

We need to be neighbors in truth and brothers and sisters in honesty.

I need to know I have some place in your prayers and that together we pray for God’s guiding hand.

The Sermon on the Mount places great emphasis on our obligations to each other.

“Therefore,” it says, “If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar.

First go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift.” (Matt 5:23-24 RSV).

Every enemy you have, whatever the cause, is a dark stain of loneliness across the fiber of your soul.

Mother Theresa didn’t give the following thoughts the title HOW TO CUT DOWN ON LONELINESS, but if you do what she suggests, the love that will fill you will be the love that Jesus spoke of and you will be rewarded with a more peaceful soul. And because of it, you will feel closer to each and every member of human kind.

1 - Accept the fact that people are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Forgive them anyways.

2 - If you are kind and loving, some people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind and loving anyway.

3 - The good you do today, people may forget tomorrow. Do good anyway.

4 - Give the world the best you have and though it may never be enough for some, give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

THE ALIEN WITHIN (1ST IN SERIES)

************************************

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

*************************************

Life can be better but effort applied is better than effort only talked about.

Fill your days full of joy and excitement over big things, little things and in-between things, rather than end up with no thing.

Don’t be daunted when I say fill your days full of joy, start out small by filling only five minutes with pleasant thoughts or doing a good deed, and work up from there. Idleness really is the devil’s workshop, and if you work there regularly, depression can truly be your overseer.

If you have ever suffered from depression, and most people have to some degree at least sometimes - it is estimated that 35 to 40 million Americans suffer some form of depression each year - you are in good, or bad, company depending on how you look at it.

Martin Luther, the great reformer who began the protestant movement, suffered from depression.

The renown preacher, Charles Spurgeon, suffered from depression. As did John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress, the artist Van Gogh, and, of course, there was Job in the Bible. The list is long.

But what is depression? Descriptions are not hard to come by, and they all sound pretty much the same.

It is difficult to be original when it comes to emotional pain. Depression is the inability to get on with life.

This alien within that afflicts both body and mind, and mutes the sunshine of the brightest day.

It is worry out of control that makes a person nasty or argumentative or just plain sad. It runs around putting mold on our minds.

It is the playing over and over of a miserable refrain.

A psychiatrist friend once described depression as sitting in a room at night and looking out at only darkness.

For the depressed there is nothing beyond the four walls of their problems. They are boxed in and can see, and think of, nothing else and no way out.

Is it all bad? Well, not totally if you are able to get through it. Because if you have known it, you never forget it and if you allow yourself to learn from this miserable invasion of the spirit, it can certainly help you understand another human being when they look at you with great anguish in their soul and simply say, “I hurt.”

Unfortunately, too many people are too easily impatient with the dejected and the downhearted. Indeed, isn’t this what we teach and really even demand? “Show me a happy face,” we say to our children over and over again.

“How do you feel?” we ask. And we want that person to affirm that they feel wonderful even if they don'’ feel wonderful. When actually what we need to do is let them know that while we hope they feel good, it is allowed if they sometimes feel down in the dumps, or worse. That we really do care how they actually feel, and that if at the moment they cannot rise to dance and sing a tune, it’s okay.

It is not to say that we should become a nation wallowing in self-pity. But neither must we as Christians send the message by our words and actions that only the happy and hearty are acceptable.

Jesus did not say, “Go away ye who labor and are heavy laden. You make me depressed.” Jesus, this Master of love and light, this tender healer of the soul did not say this.

Thank God He did not say this.

Your Jesus and mine, God come to earth as man, could not say this because He knew and understood pain. He knows how the irrational can put a man on a cross. Heavenly endorphins - this is what He offers. The peace that passeth under-standing.

Travel through the valley of darkness and He is with you. Weep and He will not grow impatiently angry or irritated at you for it.

If you reach a point of collapse, He will kneel down and gently pick you up, leaving that one set of footprints on the sand because He sometimes does not just walk with you but carries you in His arms. And, if you will let Him, He will, as time passes, show you how to think and when and why.

Afternoon

My stamina has not caught up with my determination, but slowly I will get it all put down. It isn’t hard to remember the day you almost die. You’re afraid to forget, as if remembering will keep the miracle of life from gong away.

Sound. What do you do when there is none? It was like turning down the T.V. I was slumped against the steering wheel. “If I were drunk you could smell it.”

I said to the policeman. I could think again. The glorious ability to reason Eight words and then no more. It was as if my thoughts were slipping slowly from my brain and sliding toward the ground.

Panic! Where had the officer gone? Why had he left me?

“Here. Breathe deep. It’s oxygen. I’ve called an ambulance.”

Thank God my hearing has returned. But I never heard the ambulacne’s siren. Maybe it only blinked its ligh frantically in the late afternoon traffic jam.

Would I die before I reached the hospital? I wasn’t frightened by my inner question. I viewed my thoughts and surroundings with detachment. It must have been nature’s narcotic at work.

There were questions. They raced up an down the avenues of my mind at half speed, yet spurting…

Spurt…”if my body quits, my soul is all I have left.”

Spurt…”What time is it?” No one answered, but had I really asked the question or just thought it? Why must I always know what time it is?

The stethoscope was cold against my chest. Flat on my back, the stretcher gliding through the hospital doors. I was in someone else’s hands. I don’t like to relinquish control.

Spurt…”I can’t be having a heart attack. I’m only forty-nine. Seldom even sick. Maybe a little overweight, under-exercised, a little tense, worried, but I’m not a candidate for a heart attack.”
My reasoning did nothing to calm my bounding anxiety.

Spurt…”How much have I accomplished?” How much time do I have left to finish? I can’t make it alone. Help me. –he.p..hel…”

To be continued next Tuesday
