I am your Soul. I was made for God. I am special; shaped for eternity, earthbound by body, linked with heaven every time you pray.

I am your Soul. You have forgotten me, ignored me, fed me on a diet of unconcern, sometimes done all you could to kill me, but I would not die.

I am your Soul. And I need God. I need a Savior for my guilt, a strength for my burdens, a peace for my days of pain, a spirit of thanksgiving for all my blessings.

I am your Soul. I was made for God. I am special shaped for eternity, earthbound by body, linked with heaven every time you pray.

INTRODUCTION (Repeated for those new to the series)

In an old loose leaf notebook, Thomas Kettering wrote when there was a cry from his heart. He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step.

Evening

A house divided acts like two armies or three depending upon the moment. It is often Nancy and the kids against me, but not infrequently it is the kids against Nancy and me.

Even if there is a winner we all lose.

I remember Billy used to cry out, “Daddy’s home!” and rush down the walk to meet me. Now I see a young man who wants to be a professional athlete battle with a mother who wants him to be a professional scholar.

He’s smart enough and may one day be remembered for his genius, if he’s allowed to choose, without rancor, in his own time.

Connie wasn’t always seventeen and an adolescent snob, spoiled with spending till life has become a perpetual Christmas. Any suggestions I make for restraint are treated like the ranting of an inveterate Scrooge.

We have not always been a world at war. There was a time when we shared stories and laughed together over our mistakes. There was a time when we talked instead of parrying and trying to get the upper hand.

I keep trying to find a way to plug up the holes where what little communication we have left keeps hissing out.

The walls of our house have been replaced by funhouse mirrors. But it isn’t fun and not just our images are all bent out of shape.

Evening

I did a hatchet job today and chopped down three men. I traded in three members of the human race for a computer and automation. So? The three of them gave us a combined total of forty-seven year: The way I see it we gave them those forty-seven years,

Management and labor have been at war for some time and efficiency has been the casualty.

I don’t even know their names. I don’t want to. I just signed the pink slips, making it official. I’m not about to personally deliver severance pay to some man with a family, or set a foreclosure sign mirrored in a pair of frightened eyes.

I carried out an assignment. I pursued a course necessary for efficiency. Today I held the hatchet Tomorrow will I find it in my own back?

Afternoon

It’s not that I’m terribly bad, or terribly unhappy, or terribly sad. I know the difference between high noon and midnight, but I’ve grown accustomed to the grey.

Once I was young and brought my ideals out in the open. I even shined them up sometimes that they might better be seen.

“Don’t be naive,” That’s what my college roommate said. He was a student like me, but at the moment he was a teacher.

“Everyone does it. It’s called the survival of the fittest.” So said my boss. I learned there really is a ladder called success and that there are only two directions in life – up and down.

And if you have to step on a couple of toes or even amputate, that’s the cost of doing business and ending up on top.

I wish Jesus had been as vague as some theologians. Then I could ignore Him.

But He wasn’t. I can’t remember His exact words, but – “Yes, there is darkness, go be a light.”

Yes, there are the spiritually depraved, go hunger and thirst after righteousness.”

It’s all there and hasn’t changed a bit since I first heard it as a little boy. Why did we have to be thrust from Eden?

Why is there inside me greed and graciousness, sin and sainthood? Most of us don’t deny God; we just find Him an unacceptable inconvenience. We’d like Him to pop up in times of stress and shut up when His silence would be appreciated.

My God, do I really feel that way? Have I just written what I really feel but certainly wouldn’t like the whole world to know?

Would you have your prayer life make more sense? Then follow some prayer practices that make sense.

Put prayer-tags on each day of the week.

On Monday, pray for challenges and your ability to handle them.

On Tuesday, pray for those you work with on a regular basis.

On Wednesday, pray for friends and family.

On Thursday for one or more all-out sinners that come to mind; on Friday for your financial situation.

On Saturday, pray not just for knowledge but wisdom, and on Sunday for all the saints there are in the world, and there are more than you probably realize.

You schedule all your other events, why not do the same with something as important as prayer?

It does not mean that there should not be spontaneous cries from the heart. It does mean that to also think through, with greater intensity, some of your prayers is to think through your life at the same time…

We are all creatures of habit. And like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead, some of our habits are very, very good and some are very, very horrid.

One of the very, very horrid is the habit of throwing around GD this and GD that, seemingly without a second thought.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight Oh, Lord, wrote David in Psalm 19, to which many simply reply, “But I was angry.”

And to Timothy’s admonition, Turn away from godless chatter, many folk say, “Godless chatter? And some folk say, "I don’t even think about it.Oh, I guess it bothered me the first time I used God’s name as a cuss word, but now? Well, you know how it is. It’s just a habit.”

And so yes it is a habit that keeps repeating itself...and some folk don't really hear themselves.

Defaming God can became a habit so very easily, and that is the point... for glorifying God can also become a habit.

Psalm 8:1
O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name over all the earth.
Psalm 112:2
Blessed be the name of the Lord both now and forever.

Evening

The preacher spoke of love again today. Standing there in his pulpit all save, secure and sanctified, how could he know?

In the real world people fight for what they want! How else is one to win?

But what would I have him talk about? Didn’t Christ spend much of His time telling people to love one another?

What kind of a preacher am I looking for anyway? A prophet? A saint? A prince of a fellow among men? A super-soul saver who bears the banner of Christ with a pleasant smile on his face and a hearty hello to one and all?

Someone who will preach Christ of the simple seamless garment but not bear down to hard on sacrifice? I don’t know.

I don’t like the hell I’m living, but I’m not ready to trade it in for some pious promise of a heaven in the sky. I can’t get my hand out of the cookie jar because I’m not yet willing to let go of enough.

Am I playing a game called “Let’s Fill up Time and to Hell with any Meaning in Life?”

Well, I’ve at least begun to identify my problem. There isn’t too much logic in my thinking, but at least I’m thinking.

Evening

There are pumpkins in the field, blobs of orange shouting Halloween. Witches, elves, mermaids, spirits and devils, imagined too real for centuries and now Americanized and plasticized and sold to turn a fortune.

We don’t even leave our superstitions alone.

There’s really nothing wrong with plastic pumpkins or monster faces or five-year-olds dressed up as skeletons, but when I was a boy we rang doorbells and played tricks (some more than others).

Now the kids just ring doorbells, hold out their hands and expect treats.
I remember Billy and Connie coming home with their bags bulging with goodies and complaining if one had more than the other. Materialism had won another round.

My teenage daughter now tells me that no one in her school, if they saw a penny or a nickle on the road, would bother to pick it up – maybe a dime.

Oh, God, what have we done to our children?

Afternoon

An article in the Society section entitled “Forty Six Great Drinks The Way The Experts Do It” explained that it is no longer enough to pour a drink; it must be mixed with infinite skill and variety.

Funny, it used to be booze at the bar; now the well-made cocktail is a status star in our cosmopolitan constellations.

But drinking does help. It pulls velvet down around my problems and makes them softer. It hazes out the harsh sights and sounds of life. I don’t know what it does for other people, but for me, at least for a while, I don’t care.

And that’s the problem.

I do care but I haven’t learned how to live with my caring.

Have you ever heard of Demas? He’s in the Bible you know. For just a little while actually and perhaps that is why you never heard about him or passed him by without assigning him to your memory.

In Paul’s letters to Philemon we meet him …briefly.

First, he is mentioned in the following manner, “Demas, Luke, my fellow-workers.”

So here we see Demas along with Luke standing by Paul as a devoted Christian.

The second time Demas is not mentioned first. The second time in Paul’s letter to the Colossians we read, “Luke the beloved physician, and Demas.”

And then comes the third letter and it tell us what we have already began to suspect. Demas was slipping. Now he has slipped and fellen.

For in this third letter Paul writes…”Demas forsook me, having loved this present age.”

It is not that Demas did not want to develop good character and live a good life. It is that he was filled with “good intentions” but “weak follow through.”

There was a gulf between his dreams and reality.

And that is our world...filled with those of the like of Demas... and there is you and me and what we say and what we do…and…..

A modern day philosopher wrote, “Let us not envy the man whose life seems easy. Let us rather admire the man whose trials have made him strong.”

Which is perhaps another way of saying that before we have the right to be happy we have the duty to do right…and right does sometimes bear quite a cost.

Take Paul for instance. He spent a lot of time comparing jails.

He went to the whipping post so often that if he had backed in they could have recognized him by his scars.

He was chased down, beaten up and in general given a hard time for proclaiming a faith that would not let him go and that he would not let go.

Interestingly, once there was an emperor named Nero. He had everything to make him happy. Wealth, power, position, everything. But instead of getting happy he went mad and burned down Rome.

And today men called their sons “Paul” and their dogs “Nero.”

Midmorning

I must get to work, but I can’t seem to concentrate. Perhaps this writing will fill the void I feel inside.

I made Nancy cry this morning. Not the usual mad or frustrated crying that is normal around the house these days.

Rather, I gave her a ring for our anniversary, an anniversary ring the jeweler called it.

“I thought you’d forgotten for sure this year,” she said, and started to cry.

I’ve never forgotten in twenty-seven years. Has this year been so much worse than the rest? Have I been so wrapped up in me that I’m that different?

I know it hasn’t beel all Nancy’s fault. There were the early days when she’d put out my favorite magazines, lemonade and brownies and try to lead me out to the hammock to rest.

She’d remind me that even Superman needed some relaxation. I appreciated her attempts but brushed them off.

Then there were the days she’d meet me with a kiss and I’d absent-mindedly offer her my cheek. And there were the evenings I filled with work or football games.

This wen ton and on and we communicated less and less. Finally she just stoped trying. No, it certainly hasn’t all been Nancy’s fault.

Why did we build such roadblocks to our own happiness?

Evening

Got another one of those letters today; “Dear Sir: You have been selected…”Last month it was, “A man of your standing will certainly want to have…” It would be ridiculous, except that it works. Vanity is our Achilles’ heel; after a while flattery can beat down most men’s resolve.

We all want to play Hamlet” is the way Carl Sandburg put it.

Which reminds me, we have a new status symbol in town; box seats at the pro football games. Several years ago it was hot tubs and before that Lincoln Continentals.

At least this year’s is cheaper.

I am never sure who or what establishes the trend but once it has gotten up momentum any deviation is treated like a kind of betrayal.

In the land of the free and the home of the brave, conformity seems to make slaves and cowards of us all.

Evening

If I could manipulate God for my own purposes, I would.

I’m the center of my universe just now and I know it. My joys and my sorrows are motivated solely by what happens to me.

One wit wrote, “Neither an egg nor an ego is any good until you break it.”

I laughed the first time I heard it. Today I’m not laughing.

HOW IS YOUR FORGETTER THESE DAYS?

*****************************************************************

Suppose the Navy in the Second World War had forgotten to show up to support the landing troops at D Day.

Suppose Wellington had forgotten to show up at Waterloo.

Suppose Martin Luther had meant to get his 95 Thesis written but was continually forgetting or putting off the task or………

The forgetters are bad…

The half forgetter are worse…

The professional procrastinators are………….

During that same Second World War a mother was asked if her son was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

She answered, “I’m not sure, but I think he is in the Illusions.”

He wasn’t but too many folk are…

Under the illusion that it doesn’t make that much difference if they don’t back up their talk with walk.

There is a definition that is a mouthful but that does not mean it is not worthy of our latching on to it “Christian Discipleship.”

The word “walk” appears 212 times in the Bible and that should tell us something.

It isn’t that there isn’t plenty of scripture to teach us and remind us…“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:1-2

An elderly Scottish woman was walking through the countryside.

Each time she came to a crossroads she would toss a stick high into the air.

Whichever way the stick came down was the direction she went. At one intersection, however, an old man saw her toss her stick into the air not once, not twice, but three times before resuming her
journey.

The old man was more than curious. “Why are you throwing your stick like that?” he asked.

She replied, “I’m letting God direct my journey by using this here stick.”

“Then why did you throw it three times?” asked the old man.

“Because,” she said, “the first two times He was pointing me in the wrong direction.”

He talked a lot about a new government he wanted to form and how he wanted that government to be rooted in Christianity.

He not only spoke with special eloquence. He passed out pious stories to the press and in particular to church papers. He carried a tattered Bible and made sure everyone saw him with it many times.

The number who saw him as a man of God grew…indeed many argued he was a man SENT BY GOD.

He could talk the talk magnificently and then he walked the walk but it was not the walk he had talked.
His name was Adolph Hitler.

We must remember what we say and live our lives that way. It is that simple but then it is not that simple at all…unless…we remember these words from Ephesians…
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” . Ephesians 2.10

HOW TO LIVE BETTER WHILE REALLY TRYING

***********************************************************************

Living a better life is possible and following some of the following rules may be a good place to begin.

There are, in each year, after all 12 months, 52 weeks or 365 days or 52 weeks or 525,600 minutes or 31,536, 000 seconds and these days we have a good chance of having close to 80 of them. (Actually I’m ahead of the game with a birthday coming up in September that will list me at 82)

At any rate…here the rules, suggestions…………

Be thankful for friends and family and let them know it. They are after all a lifeline for emotional sanity as you are to them. Be your best. All of you need it.

Fall in love with beauty and stay that way. Beautiful thoughts, beautiful deeds; an appreciation of beauty in all its form. Ugly thoughts and ugly deeds do indeed make for an ugly life.

Labor well and without procrastination or laziness. You do not want to be bored pr boring and you certainly don’t want to waste your life.

Seek knowledge. Foolishness comes easily to all of us and ignorance assures we will have more of it.

Be content with small victories. Get over your love affair with bigness. If you achieve something big…congratulations…but just remember a thousand small and decent deeds end up making big improvements in this old world.

CONSISTENTLY pray for God’s help. Prayers that are now and then are better than nothing but …

Never quit. Never quit. Never quit. Persistence is your friend. Quitting never is.

Trust people. It is hard these days but do it anyway until they give you a reason not to.

Give to others the gift of listening. We all are capable of talking too much and listening too little.

Just remember that…“Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.."
- ANONYMOUS

Psalms 32:11 “Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.”

RUST ON MY SOUL (A Novel) (Published by Bridge Press in 1985 & Distributed Internationally) (A new Series that began on Tues April 13th and will continue every Tuesday thereafter until finished) (Thursday & Sunday will continue to cover a variety of subjects as in the past)

Morning

I don’t think those of us who won’t repent are angry atheists. I just think many of us are indifferent and ineligible Christians. Indifferent to God’s truth and ineligible because we’re afraid to believe it.

Afternoon

I remember how it was when we couldn’t afford a nice home. We imagined one instead.

“Shall we eat on the patio or in the dinning room?”

We had a one-bedroom apartment with a kitchen small enough to give a midget claustrophobic. That was the reality.

But it didn’t really matter because we had each other and we truly believed our tomorrows would be better.

Living poor grows old quickly without hope. We were only visiting. It makes a difference.

We were saving for a down payment on a house and cutting corners whenever we could. I cut down on smoking. Nancy bought a cookbook with 128 ways to serve hamburger.

Tonight’s spread at the country club will cost as much as I once made in a week.

If the evening follows the usual pattern, I doubt it’ll be worth it.

We’ll sit around with our highballs and low talk, thinking we sound more intellectual with each round, solving the world’s problems while compounding about our own.

Last night Freddie was boasting about his latest conquest. Joe was telling hoe he sold a real lemon at a huge profit. Mike was bragging how his church was adding a new million-dollar sanctuary and wouldn’t have anything less than a D.D. in the pulpit.

Sometimes, when I realize that one man put together from the best of us wouldn’t make much of an addition to this old world, it makes me a little sick.

Evening

Tomorrow is our twenty-seventh wedding anniversary.

What have we done with all the years since we were married in that little shaded chapel in North Carolina? There was a cold wind blowing that day but the bright sun was only a reflection of our love.

Or so we felt. It had been a late fall and now it seemed that an early winter
was coming on. But we were warm with new love and great hope.

“May every day be filled with a smile and may the best of them be yours.” Strange I should still remember the minister’s parting words. He was a tiny man with tired eyes and an infectious grin.

“How far do we go? Nancy asked. She was only asking how far it was to the place where we would spend the night. But the philosopher in me, even then, read a double meaning into her question

How far indeed, Nancy? How much physical, spiritual and emotional intimacy will we allow each other? We must never treat our marriage as if it is only one more item on an entertainment bill of fare…those were my inner thoughts, then.

We hadn’t built our barriers yet. We simply sat beneath our infant learning tree and made our first entries.

We’ve never been back to our honeymoon place, to the room with a fireplace and a long view of the mountains. They say you can’t go back. But then, if you build right, you don’t have to.

Our marriage deserves no applause. It subsists on a stead diet of resolve.

Nancy moved me into a monastery long ago. Not bag and baggage, but with the chilling suggestion that the honeymoon was over and that the business of survival required all left over energy.

“Have you hugged your wife today?” It was a bumper sticker on the back of the car in front of me today and reminded me to get Nancy a gift.

Yes,, it’s been a long time since I hugged my wife. So tomorrow I’ll place her small expensive box on the breakfast table and she’ll act surprised and thank me. What does the gift without the giver say?

Ah, so much for affection.

But, I really wouldn’t want to be married to anyone else. It’s just that we stopped communicating so long ago that expressions of love are now embarrassing.

A JOURNEY

Many years ago I began a journey…

I asked the Holy Spirit to accompany me and point out things along the way to which I should pay particular attention.

I still remember that first door and what I saw as I gazed out at the world with new eyes. That first door was named Genesis and my journey through the Bible had begun.

The corridors of the Old Testament were art galleries and libraries filled with word pictures of spiritual giants; Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Isaac, Jacob and Daniel. I was speechless before such human beings but not so speechless I could not pray a prayer of thanks.

The book of Psalms was a music room and the glory of its message was like a thousand angels singing.

I entered a great room called Ecclesiastes, and the voice of a preacher echoed all around. And there was Sharon and the lily of the valley and my life was never the same again.

I entered the office of the prosaic and the profound all wrapped up in one and in this book called Proverbs I gloried in truth and the lessons learned there slowly, surely, exquisitely shaped my life.

On this journey I met prophets and they spoke of the future in ways that made my soul sing as I heard of a very special prophecy; of how it spoke of a time of the brightness of a star and the brightness of salvation and a savior born. Judea would never again be the same.
I met Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and they have become life long friends. How could it be otherwise for they walked with and knew the Master. And they told me of this Jesus and what he said and what he did and I remember thinking “What if I had not begun this journey so many pages before.”

And I met traveling correspondents named Peter, Paul, James and John and felt I was actually there watching them write their epistles.

My journey was nearing its end, this first journey that I would take many times again. And the final meeting was a throne room called Revelation and the King of Kings was there…and the healing of the nations…and I fell to my knees in a prayer of thanks.

GO FLY A KITE

God's Word is full of wonderful promises. Hear Psalms 20:6:
“Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.”

An ole professor by the name of Dr. Carrel once said, “The pure intellectual is an incomplete human being.”

Let me expand on this thought by telling you yet another story.

A little boy was flying a kite and as he let out more and more string it flew higher and higher until it became lost in some low flying clouds.

Then a rather cynical man came walking by and started poking at the young boy’s thoughts. “How do you know your kite is still there?”

The young boy’s answer was a classic.

“It is simple sir,” he replied, “I can feel the pull of it.”

SO WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING I GUESS IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS IS…WOULD YOU UNDERSTAND THE FORCE AND FACT OF GOD BETTER?...THEN GO FLY A KITE.
