Just listening to yourself in a monologue session isn’t a good idea.

So yes...Talk scripture to yourself.  Ignore the lies and excuses yourself is always willing to tell you.

Talk what you know is truth to yourself.  If you are feeding yourself with those promises of God you know and believe, your thought processes will automatically improve.

And these good and godly thoughts.  Do not let them rust from disuse.

Do not let them be lost because it has been so long since you brought them out you have forgotten where you stored them.

They are positive, eternal promises and they are designed to make it easier to handle the negatives that are bound to come.

In short, don’t let your soul go on vacation.  Life is a sacrament and you don’t take a vacation from a sacrament.

Let me tell you a story -

A man in a bar walked over to a friend who was sitting in a corner all by himself drinking. As he drew closer he saw that his friend looked terrible.  “What’s the problem?” he asked.

My mother died in June,” he said, “and left me $10,000.”

“That’s tough,” replied the friend, “No wonder you look so bad, man …you lost your mother.”

“Then in July,” the morose man continued, “My father died, leaving me $50,000.”

“Wow!  Two parents gone in two months.  No wonder you’re depressed.”

“And last month my aunt died, and left me $15,000.”

“Three close family members lost in three months?  Things haven’t been good, have they?”

“Then this past month,” continued, the friend, “nothing!  Not a single dime.”

Let me share with you another story, this time a real-life story.

You may remember reading several years back about Oseola McCarty.  She had lived in a small wooden frame house in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and worked her whole life as washer woman.

Then, in July 1995, she announced she was leaving $150,000 of her life’s savings to the University of Southern Mississippi.  “I just want some others to have the chance for an education I never had,” was her explanation.  She had dreamed of becoming a nurse but had to drop out of elementary school to help take care of sick relatives.

One story is of selfishness.  The other story is of selflessness.

One individual was living with a shrunken soul.  The other with a soul that stretched miles further than most.

CAN GOD SMILE? CAN GOD CRY? (Continuation of series)

CAN GOD CRY?  CAN GOD SMILE?

God gives… and what can we give back?  We can give back more and more of ourselves with pure delight.

The Psalmist gives a hint…no, I think we can call it more than a hint.

“I delight to do Your will, O my God.” (Psalm 40:8)

We can give back the gift of faith…and keep it growing by prayer…and by faithful actions.

And by repeating the Psalmist words so often they become our own, “I delight to do Your will, O my God.” (Psalm 40:8)

You may want to ask me, “Do you really believe

God smiles?”  And I will answer, “Of course I do.

And you may say, “But how do you know?”

“Because for all these years I have smiled back.”

And you may protest, “Aren’t you trying to glorify human behavior by putting a human smile on the face of God?”

And I will answer, “Oh, no, God created me in His image and likeness.  He smiles and thereby made me able to smile.

And then before you ask me another question, I may quote the book of Psalms again, as the Psalmist speaks to God and says, “May thy face smile on us.” (Psalm 67:1)
“For God so loved he world that he sent His only begotten son.”

Do you think that kind of God would be a God of frowns?  Do you know people who are loving, caring people and then spend most of their time frowning?  The two don’t go together too well do they?

To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,
it is important to know those around Him.

 THE APOSTLES
OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES
Twelve Minus One
JAMES, the BROTHER OF JOHN (MARKl:19) JAMES, like his younger brother John, was impetuous to the point of often needing his anger disciplined.
Once they suggested that fire be called down from heaven when Samaritans refused to show Jesus proper respect Jesus quelled this outburst and most likely gave them an ex.ba sermonic lesson on forgiveness and love. James lasted only to the age of forty-four when, by the order of King  Herod of Agrippa, he was beheaded in44A.D.
He was the first of the disciples to die. We are all remembered by what we truly believe. James never wavered in his devotion or steadfast faith in Jesus and His mission.
JOHN THE APOSTLE (JOHN 19:26) JOHN is also called

The Beloved for of all the apostles he was closest to the Master. At the Last Supper he was seated next to Him.

And from the cross Jesus committed the care of His mother to this trustworthy friend.

He was also the first to recognize the resurrected Jesus on the Sea of Galilee when He appeared in the pale morning light.

Though some early Christian art depicts him as meek and passive, he was not.

The Scripture tells how in Jerusalem he stood strong before severe persecution led by Saul of Tarsus, later to be known as Paul.

According to tradition, he left Jerusalem and went to Ephesus. It was there during the reign of Domitian, he was arrested, taken to Rome and then sent into exile to the Isle of Patmos.

By apocryphal accounts, it was here that he was given the visions of the last days, part of which he wrote down in his Book of the Revelation.

CAN GOD SMILE?  CAN GOD CRY?

Plus recent other additions Christianity by Reflex, Stretching your Soul, The Galilee Gallery etc.

+++++++++++++++++++++

You know, if we would heed only half of all the advice the Bible offers us on this subject, we would have lives filled with twice as much peace and love and understanding.

A story to make the point: Once, in order to better understand all the problems the people outside the monastery seemed to be constantly having with each other,  two monks decided that they should have a quarrel like ordinary men.

Since they had never had one before, they were not quite sure how to begin.

So one of the brothers-in-Christ looked around, found a brick, and placed it squarely between them.  “We are now going to do some role playing.  I will say, ‘This brick is mine,’” he instructed,

“Then you say, ‘No, it is mine!’  This seems to be the sort of thing that leads to a quarrel in what folk call the real world..  Are you ready?”

“I am ready, said the other monk.

Taking a deep breath, the first monk began, “This brick is mine.

“I beg your pardon,” his brother-in-Christ said, “but I do believe that it is mine.”

“No, it is not; it is mine,” the first monk repeated.

The second monk paused and replied, “Well, if it’s yours, then take it.” Then smiled and walked away.

Thus the two monks failed in their effort to generate conflict because they just couldn’t get their heart in it.  Even though they were only play acting, the idiocy of the selfishness of it all was just more than they could endure.

Why they failed is really quite obvious.

Neither had a closed mind or an open, argumentative mouth.

Neither was filled with more anger than common sense.

Neither was wearing a dunce cap made out of false pride.

               THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

Quote from book below

Below wed  SEPT 21

Into the fray, a political Lincoln, a military Lincoln and a spiritual Lincoln moved toward monumental decisions.  Struggling for truth, sometimes befuddled by reality, this man who knew his Bible as well as some preachers would often be asked if he thought God was on the side of the North.  His reply always remained the same. “My concern is not whether God is on our side.  My great concern is to be on God’s side.”9 It would be difficult to place too much emphasis on the spiritual undergirdings he brought to every decision.  This child of the wilderness had had no city lights to mute the stars or compete with moonlight.  He had watched his own growing, side by side with all the other growing things in field and forest.  It seemed natural to him to ponder that human life must be more of mind, and soul a reality

“Peace like a river” you read those words last week at the beginning of these thoughts.  …now let’s expand the meaning by describing the peculiarities of that moving body of water we call a river.

First, it is constant.  It flows and flows and keeps on flowing.  Peace that flows like a river keeps on flowing.

Sometimes our faith is magnificent and it is a torrent…and sometimes our faith weakens and it falls to a trickle, but it keeps on keeping on for that is what the eternal promise of our eternal God is all about.

Does God smile when we seek the peace and power He offers…I believe He does, indeed… when we finally understand and accept that we are not the masters of our fate or the captains of our souls.

God’s own son echoes that promise of joy.  "I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."    7

Not a lethargic, flat, joyless kind of peace…but a rejoicing kind of peace that when we see Jesus will make us want to dance and sing and do all the things we always want to do when we are overwhelmed.

Seated where you are…take a moment and picture it and allow yourself to think…it almost sounds to good to be true…but you know it is true…and as you think it and accept it once again…your smile should get larger by the minute.
