  THE CENTURION (Luke 23:47)

Centurion stands for one hundred. It was the nmnber of men such an officer commanded. The leader here named rode at the head of the dismal procession that led to Calvary.

The journey to Golgotha was more than cobblestones and a Genneth gate.

It was a journey that began in creation and stretches to eternity.

To these soldier it was a job to do... the journey a physical one ofso many steps and the process a process of so many hours.

But to prophecy ... to God's destiny ... to men and women yet unborn, a history was here enacted that would bum its significance on a million times a million human souls.

The Centurion became one of the first of these many millions.

DYSMAS (Luke 23:42)

DYSMAS is not mentioned by name in the Bible, but he is named in the writings of Havins Josephus, a Jewish historian born in Jerusalem in 37A.D., a few years after the time of Jesus.

He is, of course, remembered as one of the thieves who was crucified beside Jesus and the one to whom Christ said, " ... this day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

He is certainly a symbol of salvation, a human spirit admitting his need, every man crying out, " ... Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."

Her name was Patti Arnold and she was never voted to any great office.  She never wrote great books or composed great songs.

The only thing she did was love people and love her Lord - with such extravagance that she made mustard seed moments (exceptional moments) for hundreds of people, even when she was dying of cancer and roaming around the cancer wards.

So it really was no surprise that when she died the number of people who attended her funeral filled the church and the parking lot and some of the lot next door.

Such people do you know how tall they were?  Fourteen feet tall.  I say that because that is how tall the tree from a tiny mustard seed grows.

So pray toward, and work toward, and speak toward, and act toward bringing into being mustard seed moments. (read the parable of the Mustard seed)( Matthew (13:31–32),)

Do it and you may well be fourteen feet tall. (which is what a mustard seed grows to)

Or even better, be taller than fourteen feet and still growing when finally you head toward your heavenly home, which of course is the ultimate mustard seed moment.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT...WHY CAN'T WE GET ALONG?

Romans 12:18
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you,

live at peace with everyone.

Indeed, as Proverbs puts it, “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.” Prov. 17:1

But to accomplish this, we need to remember and practice yet another scripture:

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.  It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians:13-4-7)

You know, if we would heed only half of all the advice the Bible offers us on this subject, we would have lives filled with twice as much peace and love and understanding.

A story to make the point: Once, in order to better understand all the problems the people outside the monastery seemed to be constantly having with each other,  two monks decided that they should have a quarrel like ordinary men.

Since they had never had one before, they were not quite sure how to begin.

So one of the brothers-in-Christ looked around, found a brick, and placed it squarely between them.  “We are now going to do some role playing.  I will say, ‘This brick is mine,’” he instructed,

“Then you say, ‘No, it is mine!’  This seems to be the sort of thing that leads to a quarrel in what folk call the real world..  Are you ready?”

“I am ready, said the other monk.

Taking a deep breath, the first monk began, “This brick is mine.

“I beg your pardon,” his brother-in-Christ said, “but I do believe that it is mine.”

“No, it is not; it is mine,” the first monk repeated.

The second monk paused and replied, “Well, if it’s yours, then take it.” Then smiled and walked away.

Thus the two monks failed in their effort to generate conflict because they just couldn’t get their heart in it.  Even though they were only play acting, the idiocy of the selfishness of it all was just more than they could endure.

Why they failed is really quite obvious.

Neither had a closed mind or an open, argumentative mouth.

Neither was filled with more anger than common sense.

Neither was wearing a dunce cap made out of false pride.

 MARTHA (Luke }();38.42)
MARTHA loved The Master and opened her home to Him. She wanted to take care of him. It was that simple. It was also why she had little patience with her sister Mary who was content to sit and simply hang on every word Jesus had to say. Martha could not sit back and do nothing. At the Passover Supper in Bethany, she again was the doer.
After her brother Lazarus had been raised from the dead, it was she who was busy serving. She did, however, slowly begin to realize that being too busy is not good and that calmness is a blessing.
MARY (Luke 10:38-42)
MARY, the sister of Martha, sometimes called the contemplative Mary, lived in Bethany, a village just outside of Jerusalem.
She is best remembered for taking "a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointing the feet of Jesus, and then wiping it with her hair.
The response of Judas Iscariot is to be expected as he considers the whole thing a waste of money. To this response, Jesus rebukes, "Let her alone; against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you, but me ye have not always."
LAZARUS (JOHN 11:43,44)

LAZARUS, the brother of Martha and Mary, had been dead for four days when Jesus returned from His preaching travels. Jesus commanded that the stone sealing the tomb be rolled away, and then He called out, "Lazarus, come forth."

Stumbling, still wrapped in his grave clothes, he heard Jesus say, "Loose him, and let him go,"

To explain what He had done, Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on me, shall never die."

Are you worrying yourself silly over actual or imagined wrongs?  Are you nagging yourself to death over deeds done or left undone?  Are you letting such little inconsequential things get in your way, blocking out the possibility of your own personal mustard seed moment? (a special faith moment in which you give your all)

Then dig in your heels and make it difficult for your worries to drag you around.  Make it possible to have your mustard seed moment. It’s too grand and glorious to do anything less.

His name was Alfred Lunde and I never knew him.  I only read about him and relate the story his preacher tells of this ninety-two year old patriarch.

Alfred knew his days were numbered and so he had asked his minister to come and sit down with him and discuss what he wanted said at his funeral.

And this was his request, “Tell them that everything I have is garbage compared to having Jesus Christ in my life.  Tell them that the world does not belong to us, that this world belongs to God.  We are here to improve the earth and not to destroy it.  It is tragic not to leave the world a better place.  So many people celebrate life in such a way they have left nothing behind to improve the world.”

What a glorious place the world could be if we all followed this man’s wisdom.  And by way of emphasis.

Who will come to your funeral and why or why not?

DOES DISCOURAGEMENT MAKE A BIG DENT IN YOUR LIFE?

Retreat not from your problem.  Retreat toward prayer.  There is a difference.

That is what Jesus did.  For though He was the Son of God, He was also the Son of Man and He was subjected to the same emotions as we all are; being ignored - by the reigning church leaders, and surely sometimes being discouraged when his own disciples couldn’t always understand him.

And think how discouraged Noah must have sometimes gotten during the 120 years it took to build that ark.  All those animals bellowing and squirming and squealing, and the local populace calling him a crazy man.  And since nothing is ever built without hitting the thumb with a hammer, I’m sure he did that, too.

Finally, as predicted, the rains came, for 40 days and nights it rained.  But he had done what God had told him to do and at last the sun came out.

So, even though you may not feel like it, make a thanksgiving list, otherwise you do nothing but get more discouraged.  And above all else, don’t resign from life.  You have a duty to yourself and those around you and certainly to your God, to persevere.

It isn’t about how difficult whatever is discouraging you is, that’s not the point.

Just don’t join the Fraternity of the Fatigued.  Remember and believe what Philippians 4:13 tells

us, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

I know this, I get excited when I meet someone who deserves to be in a “Rocky” movie.  Someone who accepts the fact that life begins as a blank sheet of paper and that before the final writing there will be written a large collection of bright and shinning joys and darker days of sorrow.  But come what may, they refuse to go down.

Just remember…

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are lows, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t dare quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he just stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow.
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worse, that you must not quit.

Indeed, let me close with this quote - “The business of heaven is operating on a divine schedule that is not altered by our impatience.  God may sometimes seem slow, but He is never late!”

And because repetition is often one of the best of teachers, let me repeat myself,  “The business of heaven is operating on a divine schedule that is not altered by our impatience. God may sometimes seem slow, but He is never late!
