Twelve Minus One

MARY MAGDALENE (Luke8:2-3) This MARY was thus identified because she was from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Next to His mother, she was the closest woman to Jesus, and she was to the women who followed Jesus what Peter was to the men.

Without fear. she was with Him at the cross. It was she to whom He appeared first after the resurrection. Despite the fact that popular opinion often still infers she was a fallen and repentant woman, Biblical scholars say she was a woman of means and held a high position in society.

It is unthinkable that Jesus would have chosen a prostitute as a leader in His group. What is important is that she was an educated woman whose intellect did not get in the way of her recognizing Jesus for who He was.

The word educated woman has definite meaning when one realizes that she was raised under the influence of her father who was a wealthy Greek ship owner who also taught Platonic philosophy. Once she met Jesus. she never wavered in her devotion or belief. She accompanied Him on His last journey from Galilee to Jerusalem and after the Crucifixion helped prepare His body for entombment.

SALOME (Matthew 27:55-56)

Biblical scholars largely agree that the name of the Mother of James and John was SALOME. Do not confuse her with the dancing girl with the same name. Conjecture teaches that she was probably the sister of Mary. the Mother of Jesus.

Even though accounts of her in the Gospels is scant, it is evident that she, like her sons. was a devoted follower of Jesus. And. yes. she was at both the crucifixion and the entombment.

HOW TO TURN BAD TIMES INTO GOOD TIMES

HOW TO TURN BAD TIMES INTO GOOD TIMES

Do you believe God can make the impossible possible in your life?  I hope so.  I pray so.  I pray you have read the following scriptures and have been ready to have them speak to you.

In Mark 9:23 we are told , “Anything is possible if a person believes…”

And John 1:12 tells us that to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.

And again He tells us in John 3:16, “…For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

In the frigid waters around Greenland are countless icebergs, some little and some gigantic.  If you would observe them carefully, you’d notice that sometimes the small ice floes move in one direction while their massive counterparts flow in another.

The explanation is simple. Surface winds drive the little ones, whereas the huge masses of ice are carried along by deep ocean currents.

And so it is when we are moved by the eternal depth of God’s teaching and God’s presence and God’s power - we are no longer moved by shallow, everyday surface winds.  The shallow life is behind us and our lives now run deep.

What I am talking about is finding and holding on to, and giving thanks for, the best life possible.  A new soul deep person who shows it in word and deed.

This can be you.  It can happen if you don’t stand in a ditch of despair and allow yourself to wallow there and not try to lift yourself out of that ditch by persistent prayer.

It can be you if you don’t live in the shadows rather than in the sunlight and take up permanent residence there.  But not if your eyes that once shone with hope and are now dull with hopelessness.  And not if you are content to crawl rather than climb; content to slog rather than soar.

It takes a brave and unrelenting faith to stay on the high road.  It takes getting up when you fall down, and though stumbling again, getting up again and staying up a little longer.

All the time echoing the Apostle Paul’s words right up to your last day on earth, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  (II Timothy 4:7)

That’s Paul shouting at you down through the ages that the seemingly impossible is possible, it sometimes just takes awhile.  And that it does take persistent patience and prayer, lots of them.

Face it, there will always be disappointments but that doesn’t mean you will be helped by wallowing in self-pity.

Believe this, many times in our lives God is at work even though we can’t see His footsteps.  You know that old cliché about when one door closes another door opens.  We’ve all had it happen.

A case in point:  Once, a little boy was leading his sister up a mountain path he had found.  All she could do was constantly complain, “Why this isn’t a path at all.  It’s all rocky and bumpy.

“Sure,” he answered, “but the bumps are what you climb on.

Some people use the bumps in life to climb on and from their suffering they grow stronger while others just trip over their problems and from their suffering come out weaker.

If you are by nature a rather pessimistic person, realize that even you can learn from pain and mistakes.  Others do, so can you.

We’re not all born lucky, or with an optimistic personality, or blessed with success the first time we try something.  So be willing to work with extra effort to get what you want rather than being discouraged and giving up.

And if for some reason you don’t get your wants, you will have the satisfaction of having given it your all.

                  THE APOSTLES

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES                                Twelve Minus One

JAMES, TIlE. SON OF ALPHAEUS (Mark 3:4.18) There is much confusion in the Bible when the name JAMES is used since different places refer to James, the son of Alphaeus; James, the brother of the Lord and James "the Little," possibly referring to his size.

Are they different men or are they all the same person? This James was a brother of Jude and after Stephen was killed the other disciples chose him to preside over the affairs of the Church in Jerusalem.
He is sometimes referred to as the Bishop of Jerusalem. It is said, by the historian Hegesippus, that he made a public declaration of his faith from one of the Temple ramparts and was then hurled to the ground by angry scribes and Pharisees.

As he was then being stoned to death, for he had not been killed by the fall, it is said he called out to God to forgive his murderers.
JUDAS ISCARIOT (JOHN 6:71) I have referred to the disciples as twelve, minus one. JUDAS is of course the "minus one".

It is interesting to note that he was the only non-Galilean disciple. Nothing else is known about him before he met Jesus, and the Gospel writers mention very little of his association with the Master. he was the "treasurer" for the group, in charge of receiving contributions and redistributing them to the needy.

His place in history, however, was assured when he sold his soul for thirty pieces of silver.

When it was over, it was not over. His guilt, being more than he could bear, led him to hang himself and then when the rope broke to fall down a steep precipice. " ... he burst asunder in the midst" is the way it is recorded in Acts 1:18.

Back in the mid 1700’s, there lived a man known as John Newton: a vagabond, a deserter from the British navy, a soldier of fortune, a slave trader.

Certainly not one to be admired or held in high esteem.  But this child of hell became a child of God.

One day turned from the devil’s list of things to do and picked up a Bible and saw that that list of promises and commandments was where he wanted to spend the rest of his life.
And so the devil’s loss became heaven’s gain for the new John Newton, who could write a dirty ditty with the best of them, now wrote that hymn that has provided so much comfort and inspiration to millions, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.  I once was lost, but now am found.  Was blind, but now I see.”
A miracle some would could call it.  And it was, the kind of miracle that happens all the time.

A tiny seed of faith planted that begins to grow and grow and grow.

It happens; repentance, redemption, a spiritual earthquake.
Friedrick Ruckert wrote about it…
In every man there lives an image
Of what he ought to be,
As long as he is not that image,
He ne’re at rest will be.
Of course, God makes the impossible possible… that’s the way He set up the whole of existence.
Take the wonder of birth – and all the years following called life.  You and I here this morning all because of the amalgamation of a tiny sperm and egg.

Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual soul-fed human beings living out our existence on a spinning globe in an unbelievably complicated and endless universe.
Some of you may have had a mustard seed moment, or are waiting for your mustard seed moment when the following is true –
I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
It was not I that found, oh Savior true;
No, I was found of thee.

Handling discouragement isn’t easy, for Murphy’s law seems always to be alive and well. Sometimes even multiplying - things keep going from bad to worse.

We lose an article - and don’t find it until we have replaced it.

We have an accident, which seems to lead to more accidents until we feel we’ve become accident prone.

But that is when we really need keep on keeping on. Maybe we’ll never rid ourselves of whatever burdens seem to be weighing us down, but one thing is sure, if we give into despair it will only make things worse.

I’m not talking about spinning our wheels.  I’m talking about figuring out what we can still do rather than moaning about what we can no longer do. Shrinking the negative by accentuating the positive.

And if you can, start off by making jokes about your problem.  It really can help.  I know that’s not some people’s nature, but a smile never hurts you, and it really will lighten the load a little.

Let me share a personal application of this theory.  About three months ago, only a day after my hip surgery, one of the nurse’s aides wanted me to move to the other side of the bed so she could change the sheets.
“Just scoot over,” she told me, trying to get me to move.  Try as I might, I couldn’t.  “I can’t, my scooter is broken,” I told her.
She didn’t have a sense of humor and I don’t think she appreciated mine, but it lifted my spirits.
Well, by the next day I could scoot and walk a little and soon thereafter even able to climb some steps.  And during all these days since, I’ve used funny responses to burst any bubble of frustration.
When someone now asks me how I am feeling I sometimes reply, “I’m having a ball,” and then quickly share a little about the artificial ball and socket I now have in place of the ones God gave me in the first place.
When sickness or an accident or any incident is holding you back, the last thing you want to do is fall in love with your limitations.  Rather, pray to find another way to reach your dream, or figure a new dream that you can reach.

MATTHEW (Matthew 9:9) Some disciples are better known than others. MAITHEW is hardly lost in obscurity.

This native of Galilee was originally called Levi.

As a tax collector who collected tolls and duties from those who passed over the Sea of Galilee and along the Damascus road he was not appreciated, to say the least.

It was no small thing that this educated man, on hearing Christ say, "Follow me," did just that leaving behind wealth and power. After Jesus called him, and since he could easily afford it, he gave a feast to mark the occasion.

He was celebrating the ending of one way of life and the beginning of another. It was also an opportunity to give his former companions an insight into the new Gospel that had changed his life.

After the Ascension, he remained in Jerusalem and on the day of Pentecost received the gift of the Holy Spirit. A fifth-century church historian related that he was martyred in Ethiopia where he had traveled as a Christian missionary.

His gospel is a great gift because it so faithfully preserves the parables and words of Jesus.

SIMON TIlE ZEALOT (Luke 6: 15) Many people can name this SIMON as one of the Disciples but few can tell you much about him.

The reason is obvious, the New Testament shares little with us.

He is also referred to as the Canaanite, which does not refer to his place 'of birth but rather to his nature which was to be zealous.

Luke bears out that he  was a member of the nationalistic Zealots, a Jewish sect which adhered strictly to Mosaic ritual, and never guilty of pacifism.

Ask Simon how he felt about religious liberty and he would have readily signaled that if it wasn't given, take it. It is said that the sect of Zealots was organized by a patriot known as Judas the Galilean. who when Judea was made a Roman province, refused to buy into the idea. Want to be a member of the Zealots? Pay no taxes. Resist Roman rule.

It can easily be inferred that Simon was another disciple who wanted Jesus to lead an earthly revolution.
