The Galilee Gallery and other" NEW TESTAMENT CHARACTERS You OUGHT To Know BETTER

To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,

it is important to know those around Him.

                  THE APOSTLES

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES                                Twelve Minus One

JAMES, TIlE. SON OF ALPHAEUS (Mark 3:4.18) There is much confusion in the Bible when the name JAMES is used since different places refer to James, the son of Alphaeus; James, the brother of the Lord and James "the Little," possibly referring to his size.

Are they different men or are they all the same person? This James was a brother of Jude and after Stephen was killed the other disciples chose him to preside over the affairs of the Church in Jerusalem.
He is sometimes referred to as the Bishop of Jerusalem. It is said, by the historian Hegesippus, that he made a public declaration of his faith from one of the Temple ramparts and was then hurled to the ground by angry scribes and Pharisees.

As he was then being stoned to death, for he had not been killed by the fall, it is said he called out to God to forgive his murderers.
JUDAS ISCARIOT (JOHN 6:71) I have referred to the disciples as twelve, minus one. JUDAS is of course the "minus one".

It is interesting to note that he was the only non-Galilean disciple. Nothing else is known about him before he met Jesus, and the Gospel writers mention very little of his association with the Master. he was the "treasurer" for the group, in charge of receiving contributions and redistributing them to the needy.

His place in history, however, was assured when he sold his soul for thirty pieces of silver.

When it was over, it was not over. His guilt, being more than he could bear, led him to hang himself and then when the rope broke to fall down a steep precipice. " ... he burst asunder in the midst" is the way it is recorded in Acts 1:18.
