Handling discouragement isn’t easy, for Murphy’s law seems always to be alive and well. Sometimes even multiplying - things keep going from bad to worse.

We lose an article - and don’t find it until we have replaced it.

We have an accident, which seems to lead to more accidents until we feel we’ve become accident prone.

But that is when we really need keep on keeping on. Maybe we’ll never rid ourselves of whatever burdens seem to be weighing us down, but one thing is sure, if we give into despair it will only make things worse.

I’m not talking about spinning our wheels.  I’m talking about figuring out what we can still do rather than moaning about what we can no longer do. Shrinking the negative by accentuating the positive.

And if you can, start off by making jokes about your problem.  It really can help.  I know that’s not some people’s nature, but a smile never hurts you, and it really will lighten the load a little.

Let me share a personal application of this theory.  About three months ago, only a day after my hip surgery, one of the nurse’s aides wanted me to move to the other side of the bed so she could change the sheets.
“Just scoot over,” she told me, trying to get me to move.  Try as I might, I couldn’t.  “I can’t, my scooter is broken,” I told her.
She didn’t have a sense of humor and I don’t think she appreciated mine, but it lifted my spirits.
Well, by the next day I could scoot and walk a little and soon thereafter even able to climb some steps.  And during all these days since, I’ve used funny responses to burst any bubble of frustration.
When someone now asks me how I am feeling I sometimes reply, “I’m having a ball,” and then quickly share a little about the artificial ball and socket I now have in place of the ones God gave me in the first place.
When sickness or an accident or any incident is holding you back, the last thing you want to do is fall in love with your limitations.  Rather, pray to find another way to reach your dream, or figure a new dream that you can reach.
