By all common sense our nation should never have been. It won a war it should never have been won - no army, no navy, a group of ragtag citizens armed with little more than sticks and dreams.
And when the war was finally won,
fifty-five very diverse men gathered together to set down on paper an example
of freedom that would be a beacon for centuries yet to come. Sweltering in Philadelphia ’s Independence Hall in
temperatures that sometimes rose to 125°,
they disagreed on just about everything; argued and grew so angry
their number finally shrank to thirty-nine.
It looked impossible, until a man named George Washington, rose and
humbly said, “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest may
repair. Put this event in the hands of
God.”
A mustard seed moment.
And then not that long afterwards, old Ben Franklin quietly
petitioned for prayer that tempers might be quieted and the grace and power of
Almighty God might prevail.
Another mustard seed moment.
Yes, how wonderfully, impossibly improbable can be
the actions of we human beings when we let the Lord of love take over.
Are
you worrying yourself silly over actual or imagined wrongs? Are you nagging yourself to death over deeds
done or left undone? Are you letting
such little inconsequential things get in your way; blocking out the
possibility of your own personal mustard seed moment?
Then dig in your heels and make it
difficult for your worries to drag you around.
Make it possible to have your mustard seed moment. It’s too grand and
glorious to do anything less.
His name was
Alfred Lunde and I never knew him. I
only read about him and relate the story his preacher tells of this ninety-two
year old patriarch.
Alfred
knew his days were numbered and so he had asked his minister to come and sit
down with him and discuss what he wanted said at his funeral. And this was his request.
“Tell
them that everything I have is garbage compared to having Jesus Christ in my
life. Tell them that the world does not
belong to us, that this world belongs to God.
We are here to improve the earth and not to destroy it. It is tragic not to leave the world a better
place. So many people celebrate life in
such a way they have left nothing behind to improve the world.”
What
a glorious place the world could be if we all followed this man’s wisdom. And by way of emphasis - who will come to
your funeral and why or why not?
Her name was Patti Arnold and she
was never voted to any great office. She
never wrote great books or composed great songs. The only thing she did was love people and
her Lord with such extravagance that she made mustard seed moments for hundreds
of people, even when she was dying of cancer and roaming around the cancer
wards.
So it
really was no surprise that when she died the number of people who attended her
funeral filled the church and the parking lot and some of the lot next
door.
The people in this sermon I have talked about, do
you know how tall they were? Fourteen
feet tall. I say that because that is
how tall the tree from a tiny mustard seed grows.
So pray
toward, and work toward, and speak toward, and act toward bringing into being
mustard seed moments. Do it and you too
may well be fourteen feet tall. Or even
better, be taller than fourteen feet and still growing when finally you head
toward your heavenly home.
Which, of
course, is the ultimate mustard seed moment.
