The Galilee Gallery and other" NEW TESTAMENT CHARACTERS You OUGHT To Know BETTER

To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,

it is important to know those around Him.

 THE APOSTLES

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES

Twelve Minus One

MARY MAGDALENE (Luke8:2-3) This MARY was thus identified because she was from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Next to His mother, she was the closest woman to Jesus, and she was to the women who followed Jesus what Peter was to the men.

Without fear. she was with Him at the cross. It was she to whom He appeared first after the resurrection. Despite the fact that popular opinion often still infers she was a fallen and repentant woman, Biblical scholars say she was a woman of means and held a high position in society.
It is unthinkable that Jesus would have chosen a prostitute as a leader in His group. What is important is that she was an educated woman whose intellect did not get in the way of her recognizing Jesus for who He was.

The word educated woman has definite meaning when one realizes that she was raised under the influence of her father who was a wealthy Greek ship owner who also taught Platonic philosophy. Once she met Jesus. she never wavered in her devotion or belief. She accompanied Him on His last journey from Galilee to Jerusalem and after the Crucifixion helped prepare His body for entombment.
SALOME (Matthew 27:55-56)

Biblical scholars largely agree that the name of the Mother of James and John was SALOME. Do not confuse her with the dancing girl with the same name. Conjecture teaches that she was probably the sister of Mary. the Mother of Jesus.

Even though accounts of her in the Gospels is scant, it is evident that she, like her sons. was a devoted follower of Jesus. And. yes. she was at both the crucifixion and the entombment.
