Unfortunately, we all know Christians who are always mad at someone one…and keep taking grumpy to new levels.
Fact is…
There’s an old joke about a man who, as he passed through the Pearly Gates, looked to his left and saw a complaint box.
He had just passed St. Peter so he turned back and asked, “If everyone is so happy in heaven, why is there a complaint box?”
And St. Peter replied, “We learned a long time ago that the only way some people can be happy is if they have something to complain about. ”
But the way to find God’s happiness is not located in a heavenly or earthly complaint center.
The way to find God’s happiness is found in our attitude toward God. Which is what the Psalmist was saying in the 146th Psalm (vs. 5) “Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God,…”
In our quest for happiness we need to realize we must be in it for the long haul.
We are no longer kids, and we certainly shouldn’t act as if we are.
When we were kids…maybe we turned to our parents and said, “I don’t want to go to school and if you want me to be happy…you won’t make me go. ”
But our parents knew better and skipping school was not a priority. “School is for making you an educated person and you are in it for the long haul. So put on your shoes and get going. ”
Or, perhaps your complaint was, “I don’t want to eat my vegetables…I prefer candy”…and your parents said, “Vegetables are good for you. You are into this business of growing up healthy and happy for the long haul…so eat your vegetables. ”
And we grew up…or at least we grew older…and if we are not careful, we join the parade of I-WANT-IT-NOW people. And It, whatever “it” is, makes us happy for a little bit, but not for a long while. And there is certainly not the contentment of eternity in it.
So let me sum it up this way… don’t try to find “Happy” in instant gratification.
“Things” are not the answers to your prayers. Rather take a course that is basically about YOU’RE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL. It will teach you that your faith has the truth of eternity in it, and that is a course you don’t want to fail.
