To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,

it is important to know those around Him.

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES

 MARTHA (Luke }();38.42)
MARTHA loved The Master and opened her home to Him. She wanted to take care of him. It was that simple. It was also why she had little patience with her sister Mary who was content to sit and simply hang on every word Jesus had to say. Martha could not sit back and do nothing. At the Passover Supper in Bethany, she again was the doer.

After her brother Lazarus had been raised from the dead, it was she who was busy serving. She did, however, slowly begin to realize that being too busy is not good and that calmness is a blessing.
MARY (Luke 10:38-42)

MARY, the sister of Martha, sometimes called the contemplative Mary, lived in Bethany, a village just outside of Jerusalem.
She is best remembered for taking "a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointing the feet of Jesus, and then wiping it with her hair.
The response of Judas Iscariot is to be expected as he considers the whole thing a waste of money. To this response, Jesus rebukes, "Let her alone; against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you, but me ye have not always."

LAZARUS (JOHN 11:43,44)

LAZARUS, the brother of Martha and Mary, had been dead for four days when Jesus returned from His preaching travels. Jesus commanded that the stone sealing the tomb be rolled away, and then He called out, "Lazarus, come forth."

Stumbling, still wrapped in his grave clothes, he heard Jesus say, "Loose him, and let him go,"

To explain what He had done, Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on me, shall never die."
