The Galilee Gallery and other" NEW TESTAMENT CHARACTERS You OUGHT To Know BETTER

To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,

it is important to know those around Him.

 THE APOSTLES

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES

 NICODEMUS (Jobn 3:1-21)

This Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin is first noted in the Bible visiting Jesus for the purpose of learning more about His doctrines. NICODEMUS met with Him under cover of night so no one would know he was a follower.

It was during this teaching time that Jesus emphasized the importance of "being born again."

He is next encountered in the Sanhedrin where he mildly protests when they are plotting against Christ. It is before these men that Christ was tried for blasphemy.

Sanhedrin means the setting together or council. First instituted by Moses and composed of70 men.

It is frequently used in the New Testament to denote the supreme judicial and administrative council of the Jews. Its decrees were binding not only on the Jews in Palestine but on those scattered abroad. Its usual place of meeting was within the precincts of the Temple, in the hall Nazareth, but also sometimes it met in the house of the high priest.

As to the Sanhedrin member, Nicodemus, he is mentioned one last time as taking part in the preparation of the anointing and burial of the body of Christ (John 19:39).

ZACCHAEUS (Luke 19:2-10) ZACCHAEUS was "chief among the publicans" which meant that when it came time to collect taxes in the district, he was the man in charge. Because ofhis wealth, and the reputation for dishonesty that all tax collector carried, he was not a man who had won any recent popularity contests.

Though determined to see Jesus, he was a small individual and could not break through the crowd that surrounded Him when He was passing through Jericho. So Zacchaeus did the next best thing. ran ahead of the mob and climbed a sycamore tree.

It worked. Jesus saw him and said, " ... Zacchaeus, come down immediately; I must stay at thy house today."

It was an action by Jesus that drew an immediate negative response. The crowd did not like Zacchaeus. Therefore, they expected the same response from Christ. Immediately on the defensive, Zacchaeus cried out, "Lord, the half of my good I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man  by false accusation, I restore him four fold."

The crowd wasn't convinced, but Jesus saw beyond what they saw. He saw into th~ heart of Zacchaeus and with compassion comforted him by saying, "Today salvation has come to this house ... for the Son of man came to seek and save what was lost."
