A JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF (4th IN LENTEN SERIES)

If we moan and mourn for lost youth, it will but make us fail to appreciate the fact that age and youth lie not so much in our arteries as in our attitude. The grief of growing old?

It can be put to rest by remembering some words the late General Douglas MacArthur once wrote: You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubts; As young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; As young as your hope, as old as your despair.

No matter what age we are, we will be about as happy or as sad as we make up our minds to be, for the real business of living takes place in the mind.

In our thoughts. “As a man thinketh, so is he,” wrote the Apostle Paul. What journeys through grief have you made or are still making? Dreams that slow down and stagnate? Hurts that hover, death with all its sting?

Do you weep and feel so all alone? Shout against the silence of the night and feel no one is listening? Fall to your knees and solace does not immediately come? Or worse still, you feel it will never come?

Not giving up in our search for comforting holy truths. Not giving up. Therein is the truth you should seek with all your mind and spirit.

You do not have to like whatever is your problem, but you do have to admit that that is the way it sometimes is.

Life is not always kind or fair.

But pray to be able to say, as did the Apostle Paul in Timothy (4:18), “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)

When I used to run cross country races in college, I figured if I hadn’t given my all, if I wasn’t almost in a state of collapse at the end of a race, then what was the point of having run the race.

 When I took biology, which wasn’t my best subject, from a professor who didn’t believe anybody deserved an A, I did not just give up, I gave it my all.

 The harder a problem during my lifetime, the more persistent my prayers have been.

What I am saying is I hope obvious. Go for the gusto in mind, body and spirit and it pays off. But when you have done all you can, in ever way you can to solve a problem or pain, don’t beat your head bloody and your soul ragged continuing after the impossible.

Learn to finally say and mean, “Thy will be done, Lord. Thy will be done.”

Saying, “I’m 39 and holding,” is more tragic than humorous because it argues that age has no attributes.

If I can’t, it’s a cow shed.” It’s called attitude and it can make us prematurely old or longer young. For truly, things aren’t just what they are, but rather how we choose to see them.” **********************************
