His name was Alfred Lunde and I never knew him. I only read about him and relate the story his preacher tells of this ninety-two year old patriarch.
Alfred knew his days were numbered and so he had asked
his minister to come and sit down with him and discuss what he wanted said at
his funeral.
And this
was his request, “Tell them that
everything I have is garbage compared to having Jesus Christ in my life. Tell them that the world does not belong to
us, that this world belongs to God. We
are here to improve the earth and not to destroy it. It is tragic not to leave the world a better
place. So many people celebrate life in
such a way they have left nothing behind to improve the world.”
What a
glorious place the world could be if we all followed this man’s wisdom. And by way of emphasis.
Who will
come to your funeral and why or why not?
Her name was Patti Arnold and
she was never voted to any great office.
She never wrote great books or composed great songs. The only thing she did was love people and
love her Lord - with such extravagance that she made mustard seed moments for hundreds
of people, even when she was dying of cancer and roaming around the cancer
wards.
So it really
was no surprise that when she died the number of people who attended her
funeral filled the church and the parking lot and some of the lot next
door.
The people I have just written
about, do you know how tall they were?
Fourteen feet tall. I say that
because that is how tall the tree from a tiny mustard seed grows. So pray toward, and work toward, and speak
toward, and act toward bringing into being mustard seed moments.
Do it
and you may well be fourteen feet tall.
Or even better, be taller than fourteen feet and still growing when
finally you head toward your heavenly home,
which of
course is the ultimate mustard seed moment.

DON'T TRY TO SERVE
TWO MASTERS...IT WON'T WORK
Matthew 6:24 doesn’t beat around the
busy. It reads, “No man can serve two
masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will
hold to the one and despise the other.”
There are
three steps to Christian conversion.
First you fill your mind with facts. Who Christ was, what He did, what
He said, who He influenced yesterday, today and will tomorrow.
Second,
you learn some rules. You pray some
prayers, you love some enemies, you fertilize the soil of your soul.
Third,
you say and mean, “Lord, here am I. Take
me. Take my heart for here I feel the
strongest and give the most. When I give
You this, You have all of me.”
John wrote in John 1:14 “And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among
us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father)
full of grace and truth.”
So just remember, you were made in
the image of God, even when you are acting ungodly. The Psalmist says you are
made a little less than divine. No instrument that you can make can match the instrument that
you are. (rewrite of a statement
by Wallace Hamilton) Sometimes you may
wonder, is there a heavenly book where your name is listed and your address
given beneath it.
The great preacher, Harry Emerson
Fosdick once said, “The man who spends a great deal of
time trying to decide whether he wants to be married or a bachelor already has
decided.” Same thing with being a
Christian. If you spend a great deal of
time trying to decide whether you really want to really be a Christian, you
already have decided.
How does
that 139th Psalm read?
“Whither shall
I go from thy spirit? Or wither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there:
if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell
in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy
right hand shall hold me.”

There is
a favorite compliment that I imagine David spoke to Bethsheba in her waning
years and probably Anthony must have given to Cleopatra when he returned to the
fertile valley of the Nile, and every Joe and Jane banter about on every city
street and country lane. It is the
compliment that usually goes like this, “Why, Mary, you haven’t changed a
bit.” I am aware of what this means, but
if taken very literally, you suddenly realize it is no compliment.
To live live
from one day to the next and not change is an insult to your intelligence and a
blight on the sensitivity of your soul
Some people go to sleep standing up.
They never change. They live a
lifetime in the same old rut. The
rewrite the old favorite hymn to read, “Take my life and let it be, just like
it was yesterdee." There is real
danger in such a mode of living for it can change the road of life into a road
to oblivion.
You see, if I
were to meet a friend from my 50 plus years ago college days I want him to say,
“Neil, you’ve changed. You are more
mature, emotioanlly and spiritually. You
may sag a little more here and there but I think you soul is firmer.”
Do you believe in Easter? Really believe in Easter. Well, if you do…I’ll know it, God will know
it…and best of all…you will know it too.

"THE
