Do you think God gave you life so you could spend your days drowning in mediocrity?

Do I think God meant for me to take the easy way out until one day I would know no other way?  Is commitment a great word that everyone understands but few want to follow?

H.L. Mencken refused to be associated with any cause, any organization, any project, any person who was bogged down by mediocrity.  He believed that anything worth doing was worth doing right.

There is an answer to all of this you know.

Just go home and make a sign and hang it over your front door.  “All who live within are no worse than anyone else.”

And  any church can do the same, just paint a sign and hang it from the cross, “Our congregation is no worse than any other.

Michelangelo received, one day, a visit from a friend.  He was working on a sculptor and as far as the friend could see it was finished.

The next day, since his friend was still in town, he visited Michelangelo again.  He was still working on the sculptor.

Seeing no visible change he asked Michelangelo, “You haven’t been working on this same statue all this time, have you?”

“Indeed, I have,” answered the sculptor, “I’ve been retouching the facial features, refining the leg muscles, polishing the torso; I’ve softened the presentation of some areas and enhanced the eye’s expression.”

“But all those things are insignificant,” responded his friend, “They are mere trifles.”

“That may be,” replied Michelangelo, “ but trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.”

A young musician was deeply impressed by the skill of an older musician.  After praising the older man for what he had just heard he said, “It must be great to have all the practicing behind you and be able to simply sit down and play so magnificently.”

“Oh,” came back the reply, “I still practice eight hours a day.”

“But why,” exclaimed the young man.  “You are already great.”

“Thank you,” said the elderly violinist as he placed his violin in its case, “but you  see I’m not satisfied with being great.  I’m still working at being superb.”

I think this is what God wants you and I to do right up to our last day of life, work toward being superb.  Never achieving it, but also never giving up on it as a goal.  No not a goal, rather a mission.

Just remember, the last thing God wants us to do is call a personal garbage dump a garden, but people do it all the time.

Do it from the very beginning.  Have you ever watched four year olds dig in their heels when they know what they are doing is wrong but won’t admit it?

Human nature does that because to admit a wrong is to admit the need of change and people don’t like change.

Do you know what is the greatest enemy of excellence?  It is the willingness to be satisfied with good.  (paraphrase of a Zig Ziglar statement)
