Suppose your life expectancy was only 24 hours? From beginning to end, that was all there was.
Would you feel a greater urgency to live a better life? To be a spiritual hero rather than a Christian coward?
There is a bug in the south whose total existence consists of 1,440 minutes - that makes it seem longer than 24 hours, doesn’t it? At any rate, that is all the lifetime this particular bug is offered. They emerge from a pond in the morning and attain adulthood by noon. Because the females will only mate with the guys that fly the highest, by this time of the day the males are giving it their all, trying to swarm higher than any of the thousands of other males.
To us it may not seem like much of a life but consider, they are so committed to the continuation of their species that their only goal is to give it their all - literally.
It is never too late to have greater commitment but it is oh so important to what we commit ourselves. Peter Jennings, the newscaster, had 67 years and gave his all. Adolph Hitler had several years less but he also gave it his all. Consider the differences of their commitments. I write…you are reading –, so we obviously haven’t yet run out of time. And hopefully we haven’t run out of commitment to things worthy of our commitment.
Remember, it is never too late to be not just God’s child, but the best God’s child we can be. We are not a 24 hour bug, our lives are much more complicated than that. And that is my point. When the gift of life is greater, the call to greater commitment is greater.
