That Palm Sunday week? He knew he was trading grandeur for grim and He went ahead and did it anyway. He had always known His destiny - known that Palm Sunday and the weeks following were coming.

And this was a return visit to Jerusalem for Jesus. Remember that exceptional reference to His teaching in the Temple when He was but 12? He was not with the caravan and when Mary and Joseph finally found Him, He replied to His parents’ worry, “Know ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

This was His last week on earth before the resurrection and ascension, and He was still about His Father’s business.

Had Jesus been entering today’s New York City, it would have been a ticker-tape parade with confetti covering the pavement instead of palm fronds laid down on the streets before Him.

The crowds went wild, one million of them. Ten times the normal population for after all, it was Passover time. To say that excitement was in the air would be an understatement.

“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.”

The shouting was loud and clear.

The Bible doesn’t record their saying it, but surely it was implied, “Watch out, Romans! It’s all going to be down hill for you now. Your days are numbered. King Jesus has just entered the political arena, so take care.”

Questions certainly must have had to spread throughout the gathering throng, “Do you know who this Jesus is?” “What has this Jesus done?” And there were those who could have readily answered these questions.

“Do you know what this Jesus is going to do?” The Disciples knew the answer to that question, but not one of them really believed all that Jesus had been warning them about.

And who was in this Passover multitude? Was Nicodemus, the converted Pharisee, there? Or Bartimaeus, blind no more because of this Christ? Or tree-climbing Zacchaeus, filled with gratitude? Or were there any of the lepers made clean by this Jesus’ hand and now able to mingle with the crowd?

Were there spies at work for the church leaders? Waiting with attentive ears to gather information to bring Him down? And what of Roman soldiers? Certainly they were out in force - large crowds usually mean trouble. There had been rebellions in the past. Those in power did not want one in the present. They viewed this Jesus with distrust, if not outright alarm

And what of the Disciples? Some traveled with him, others had gone on ahead to make arrangements for their Passover meal, but to a man they were confused. They were still confused in the Upper Room and later in the Garden of Gethsemane. And even more confused after the cross.

But after the empty tomb and the Resurrection and the Ascension they were confused no more. Who Jesus really was all fell in place. When You come back from the dead, everything You’ve been saying really comes to life.
