Of course, God makes the impossible possible… that’s the way He set up the whole of existence.  Take the wonder of birth – and all the years following called life.  You and I here this morning all because of the amalgamation of a tiny sperm and egg.  Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual soul-fed human beings living out our existence on a spinning globe in an unbelievably complicated and endless universe.

Some of you may have had a mustard seed moment, or are waiting for your mustard seed moment when the following is true –

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew

he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;

It was not I that found, oh Savior true;

No, I was found of thee.

Do you believe God can make the impossible possible in your life?  I hope so.  I pray so.  I pray you have read the following scriptures and have been ready to have them speak to you.

In Mark 9:23 we are told …Anything is possible if a person believes.

And John 1:12 tells us … to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

And in John 3:16 we are told …For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

In the frigid waters around Greenland are countless icebergs, some little and some gigantic.  If you would observe them carefully, you’d notice that sometimes the small ice floes move in one direction while their massive counterparts flow in another.

The explanation is simple. Surface winds drive the little ones, whereas the huge masses of ice are carried along by deep ocean currents.

And so it is when we are moved by the eternal depth of God’s teaching and God’s presence and God’s power… we are no longer moved by shallow, everyday surface winds.  The shallow life is behind us and our lives now run deep.

What I am talking about is finding, and holding on to, and giving thanks for…the best life possible.  A new soul-deep-person who shows it in word and deed.  That can be yours.

It can happen if you don’t stand in a ditch of despair and allow yourself to wallow there and not try to lift yourself out of that ditch by persistent prayer.

It can be yours if you don’t live in the shadows rather than in the sunlight and take up permanent residence there.  But not if your eyes that once shone with hope and are now dull with hopelessness.  And not if you are content to crawl rather than climb; content to slog rather than soar.

It takes a brave and unrelenting faith to stay on the high road.  It takes getting up when you fall down.  And stumbling again and getting up again, and each time staying up a little longer.  All the time echoing the Apostle Paul’s words right up to your last day on earth, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  (II Timothy 4:7)

Paul shouting at you down through the ages that the seemingly impossible is possible, it sometimes just takes awhile; and that it does take persistent patience and prayer…and lots of them.

You may never write a hymn that is still sung centuries after you die.  You may never be acclaimed by the masses.  But one by one, Christians who follow our Lord’s teaching do make this world a better place to live.  And make it happen one mustard seed moment after the other.

I chose the scripture that began this sermon because it tells us that if we want impossible things to happen, we have to chase down and capture an impossible faith.  The kind of faith that leads others to ask, “How did you do it?”

You see, a mustard seed really is terribly small, so insignificant it takes hundreds of them to make just a gram.  And if a man’s eyes are not good, he has to actually put on glasses to be able to see it.  But infinitesimal as it is, when planted, this tiny seed grows into a tree.

So mustard seed moments may often seem quite mundane, but the circumstances derived from such moments are never mundane.  They have an explosive quality about them.  They shout!  That’s why those who know from personal experience call what the Bible has to teach…DYNAMITE.

Take the example of a tax collector named Matthew.  Who would have expected him to give up such a lucrative position and follow a poor Nazarene?  A rather futile move, some must have thought.  But the mustard seed moment was there waiting, and he became one of the chosen 12.

And John was a fisherman making a good living doing what he liked, until he gave it all up to follow the Master.  I’m sure some of his friends probably commented, “He’s out there following some ne’er-do-well called Jesus.  I don’t believe it.”  But believe it, for that is what happened.  A mustard seed moment and he became one of the chosen 12.

And all the other 10 chosen to be Christ’s disciples had their mustard seed moments.  (Judas, of course, was a mustard seed moment gone bad.)

CONFLICT MISMANAGEMENT? WHY CAN'T WE GET ALONG

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I challenge each of you to go an entire day without making a negative remark about someone else.

For therein lies another of the causes of conflict… all the mean, thoughtless gossip-comments good people spread around all the time…comments that get repeated and repeated and repeated until they make their way back to the person that has been commented about.

Two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath.

The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started sinking, but the friend pulled him out and saved him.

After he had recovered, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and then saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied, "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can blow it away.

But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

Now, I’m going to put before you a few personal

questions and I hope you are able and willing to

honestly answer them to yourself.

Are you a peacemaker or are you a warrior?

Do you turn proverbial swords into plows or plows into swords?

Are you a master at making cutting remarks?

Just remember, “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in pitchers of silver.” (Proverbs. 25:11)

Do you harbor grudges as if they were long lost friends?

Do you accuse everyone else of having a bad temper when in reality it is you whose temper IS CONSTANTLY FLARING  out of control?

Are you a smoldering coal…always on the edge of burning anyone who comes in contact with you?

Yes…it is true that…"Coping with difficult people is always a problem. Especially if the difficult person happens to be yourself." -John Maxwell-

What is the biggest problem with conflict?  It’s like a magnet… For many people once it gets hold of them they can’t let it go.

Such as the husband who said that after 50 years of marriage, he and his wife have had only one fight.

When asked the secret to their success he replied, “Our first and only fight started on our honeymoon and I’m still waiting for it to end!”

“Life is relationships, the rest is in the details.”  (Gary Smalley)

And when we keep driving nails into a relationship, we are trying to build a good life on a ragged wound… and it just isn’t going to happen.

Want to know how to make any conflict worse?  Use the words “never” and “always.”

You “never” and name the fault.  Or…you “always” and name the fault.

ATHEISM-AGNOSTICISM-NO RELIGION

(Continuation of Sermon on Atheism)

And what of love and brotherhood…these powerful emotions that rule our lives?  Is it really

believable that they could have risen out of nothingness?

And the little seemingly inconsequential things of creation…could some mindless mechanical

chemical eruption have developed chocolate and peppermint…a cockle-doodle-dooing rooster…a

quacking duck…the sublime and the slaphappy…proving God does have a sense of humor.

Or His adding such beauty to what otherwise would be common place...his consideration to have leaves in Fall not just drop unceremoniously from the tress but rather become rainbows of color, red and gold all scattering their patterns along the ground.

And what about a simple thing such as a smile?  That wonderful facial expression which

actually means the same thing no matter what language you speak.

And this oblate spheroid called earth we live on that is 93 million miles from the surface of the sun;  why doesn’t it burn it to a crisp?  It doesn’t because it is tilted at a perfect 23 degree  angle.  Not 22 degrees.  Not 24.  And our protective ozone layer that makes it possible for earth to sustain  life in the first place?  All that just happened by chance, rather than an orderly mind of God?  Come-on.

And this equal global distribution of the rays of the sun that make it possible for the food chain to

exist.  And the combination of nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere we breathe every day just happens

to be an exact mix that life needs to exist.

Really?  All this just happened?  Mindless nothingness out there throwing nothingness into the air

and out of this simple non directed act…came our Universe?

It defies logic.  It certainly does not deify a human mind that argues otherwise.

I think not!

Pure and simple, it is a stretch to say that nothing created something - but that is the basic premise

of atheism. A firm belief in unbelief.

The world famous Astronomer, Johannes Kepler, was troubled by one of his friends who continually

denied the existence of God.  Time and time again he heard him say that the universe came into being

    purely by mechanical means.

So one day, Johannes set about constructing a beautiful model of our galaxy with the sun in the

center and all the planets and their moons revolving around it.

The next time his friend came into the Observatory and saw the beautiful model, he exclaimed with

delight, “How beautiful it is.  Who made it?”

And Kepler casually answered.  “No one, it made itself.”

His friend persisted, “Come on now, tell me, who made it?”

To which Kepler finally answered, “Friend, you insist that this mere toy, a weak imitation of the real

thing, could not make itself, yet I understand you believe that the great universe did make

    itself.”

Did a mindless universe create my own memory?  My own brain?  The thought processes that allow

me to share with you at this moment and for you to understand?

Did the useful arise out of the useless with no direction but rather by some non-directional

    directions?

An American cutlery manufacturer wrote: “It takes a girl in our factory two days to learn how to put

the 17 parts of a meat chopper together.”

And then the cutlery manufacturer continued,  “It may be that these millions of worlds, all balanced

so wonderfully in space—it may be they just happened: it may be, by millions of years of tumbling about,

    they finally arranged themselves.

I don't know.  I am merely a plain manufacturer of cutlery.  But this I do know - that you can shake

the 17 parts of a meat chopper around in a washtub for the next 17 millions of years, and you’ll never

    make a meat chopper.”

Alister McGrath, a former atheist and now a Christian, writes, “I believe in Christianity as I believe

the sun has risen… not simply because I see it… but because by it I see everything else.”

To put a scalpel to the soul and cut away the presence of God is a sad debilitating thing.  It is like

turning ones back on a feast and then wondering with what to fill the emptiness that now exists.

And in closing, remember these words of truth from Psalm 19:1.

“The Heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

Not…”The Heavens declare the glory of nothingness and the sky above proclaims the handiwork of

    nothingness. “
