Let me tell you a Once Upon A Time story….Once upon a time there was a horse and he went wandering.  Indeed, he wandered so far and wide he found himself completely lost.  So he wandered on some more and as luck would have it, he did find his way back home.  But he had been gone a long time and he had had nothing to eat or drink and he felt faint.

Staggering into the barn he saw the oats that were always there and the water that was always there.  He was saved!

But he had a problem.

For some reason, he couldn’t make up his mind which to do first; eat the oats or drink the water.  He was just as hungry as he was thirsty and he simply could not make up his mind.

So there he stood pondering which of the two choices he should go for first.  An hour later he was still considering.  And night came and sunrise and still the poor horse could not make up his mind.

One week later he died of starvation and dehydration.

In life, no decision often becomes a decision, and sometimes the consequences are unbelievably bad.

What makes a man or woman act as we do?  What makes us choose lesser things over a greater God?  Well, someone has said, “If you don’t bow before God your maker you will bow before god’s of your own making.”

The Apostle Paul said it, “Put on the whole Armor of God.”  Not a bad idea what with all the slings and arrows of outrageous temptations always around.

Remember and never forget it that happiness is not a thing of matter but of mind, not a hillside full of gold but a heart full of peace.

The great preacher Phillip Brooks was a great believer in prayer, so one day he wrote the following, “Do not pray for an easier life.  Pray to be a stronger person.”

What do to do to make such an improvement process take place?  Well, let me give some practical suggestions.

In the process of becoming more like your ideals…

1.                          Find fault with yourself where such finding will aim you in the right direction.  Don’t find fault with your wife or husband or boss (unless you happen to be the boss) or children or even this sermon.  Find fault with yourself first and foremost.

2.                          Then write the faults down.  Otherwise your excuse-eraser will simply work overtime and no improvement will be forth coming.

3.                          Take out your Bible and start reading and keep on reading until you have found a verse that fits each and every one of the faults you listed.

Then write beside the fault the scripture you have found.

Why all this writing?
Because now you need to put what you have written in a prominent place so you will keep seeing it and reading it and thereby being reminded to start doing something about them.

Don’t throw away what you have written for if you do you will have thrown away your chance for improvement.

And a wrap up thought, I would say to you and to myself, “Pray not to be broad-minded or narrow minded but rather like-minded with your Lord.”
