To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,
it is important to know those around Him.
THE APOSTLES
OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES
Twelve Minus One
JAMES, the BROTHER OF JOHN (MARKl:19) JAMES, like his younger brother John, was impetuous to the point of often needing his anger disciplined.
Once they suggested that fire be called down from heaven when Samaritans refused to show Jesus proper respect Jesus quelled this outburst and most likely gave them an ex.ba sermonic lesson on forgiveness and love. James lasted only to the age of forty-four when, by the order of King Herod of Agrippa, he was beheaded in44A.D.
He was the first of the disciples to die. We are all remembered by what we truly believe. James never wavered in his devotion or steadfast faith in Jesus and His mission.
JOHN THE APOSTLE (JOHN 19:26) JOHN is also called
The Beloved for of all the apostles he was closest to the Master. At the Last Supper he was seated next to Him.
And from the cross Jesus committed the care of His mother to this trustworthy friend.
He was also the first to recognize the resurrected Jesus on the Sea of Galilee when He appeared in the pale morning light.
Though some early Christian art depicts him as meek and passive, he was not.
The Scripture tells how in Jerusalem he stood strong before severe persecution led by Saul of Tarsus, later to be known as Paul.
According to tradition, he left Jerusalem and went to Ephesus. It was there during the reign of Domitian, he was arrested, taken to Rome and then sent into exile to the Isle of Patmos.
By apocryphal accounts, it was here that he was given the visions of the last days, part of which he wrote down in his Book of the Revelation.
