He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step. Evening
I always thought my prayer to God was kind of indecent, like laying a swine before a pearl of great price. Now, finally, I think I understand. If I waited until I was perfect I wouldn't need Christ. I could be my own savior. The possibility of that is nil and the reality of my need is forever.
Evening
On the day of my birth I was no more than a breath away from my Creator. On the day of my death I will be that breath away again. Between the first and the last breath I have a life to live and a destiny to fulfill. I am a child of God. But the definition is easier than the doing.
Late night
As I prayed tonight I thought of some words by Martin Tupper, "Prayer is the tender nerve that moves the muscles of omnipotence." My prayer to move God to move me-that's mind-boggling.
Evening
I think I do know what's been wrong with my prayers. I've used them like a spiritual catharsis. I've talked things out with God, talked-but then I've always talked too much.
When I was young I got the message that prayer was a monologue, not a dialogue. Not a two-way street. Everyone praying out loud …in church…at the dinner table ere now and then when we actually sit down together…no pauses to listen.
A listening, too? Maybe Have you been trying to tell me something all these years, but I just had blinders on my ears.
I’m putting down my pen Lord. Shutting off my computer. Turning off the lights and in the deep quiet of a questing soul…just listening…just listening…just listening. To be continued next Tuesday
