In times of private, personal worship, perhaps on your back porch, did that porch turn into a sanctuary…

and those birds in the background –

did they become nature’s choir singing to your soul?

Or have you never had a private, personal worship service on your back porch or family room or anywhere else… Only you and God…

Do you approach coming to church as a magnificent opportunity to sing praises to His name and be warmed and taught by His holy word?

And at the end of a service, whether the sermon was worth listening to or not, will you have taken some of the precious gift of your life and given it to our Lord?

Or do you come expecting to be bored… and at least partly because of your attitude, you get what you expected?

We must be willing… to get up and get going… to pray and spend at least some time considering how we got here in the first place…

Finding meaning in life and excitement in life is certainly not the result of sitting on our rear ends just having the thought to get up and do and be something… but not actually getting up and doing and being something.

Faith?  We need to get excited about it…

Unfortunately too many people want to wear the tag without doing the deeds…

       NOW that really is boring.

There is a favorite compliment that I imagine David spoke to Bethsheba in her waning years and probably Anthony must have given to Cleopatra when he returned to the fertile valley of the Nile, and every Joe and Jane banter about on every city street and country lane.

It is the compliment that usually goes like this, “Why, Mary, you haven’t changed a bit.”  I am aware of what this means, but if taken very literally, you suddenly realize it is no compliment.

To live from one day to the next and not change is an insult to your intelligence and a blight on the sensitivity of your soul

Some people go to sleep standing up.

They never change.  They live a lifetime in the same old rut.  The rewrite the old favorite hymn to read, “Take my life and let it be, just like it was yesterdee."  There is real danger in such a mode of living for it can change the road of life into a road to oblivion.

You see, if I were to meet a friend from my 50 plus years ago college days I want him to say, “Neil, you’ve changed.  You are more mature, emotioanlly and spiritually.  You may sag a little more here and there but I think you soul is firmer.”

Do you believe in Easter?  Really believe in Easter.  Well, if you do…I’ll know it, God will know it…and best of all…you will know it too.

His name was Alfred Lunde and I never knew him.  I only read about him and relate the story his preacher tells of this ninety-two year old patriarch.

Alfred knew his days were numbered and so he had asked his minister to come and sit down with him and discuss what he wanted said at his funeral.

And this was his request, “Tell them that everything I have is garbage compared to having Jesus Christ in my life.  Tell them that the world does not belong to us, that this world belongs to God.  We are here to improve the earth and not to destroy it.  It is tragic not to leave the world a better place.  So many people celebrate life in such a way they have left nothing behind to improve the world.”

What a glorious place the world could be if we all followed this man’s wisdom.  And by way of emphasis.

Who will come to your funeral and why or why not?

Her name was Patti Arnold and she was never voted to any great office.  She never wrote great books or composed great songs.  The only thing she did was love people and love her Lord - with such extravagance that she made mustard seed moments for hundreds of people, even when she was dying of cancer and roaming around the cancer wards.

So it really was no surprise that when she died the number of people who attended her funeral filled the church and the parking lot and some of the lot next door.

The people I have just written about, do you know how tall they were?  Fourteen feet tall.  I say that because that is how tall the tree from a tiny mustard seed grows.  So pray toward, and work toward, and speak toward, and act toward bringing into being mustard seed moments.

Do it and you may well be fourteen feet tall.  Or even better, be taller than fourteen feet and still growing when finally you head toward your heavenly home,

which of course is the ultimate mustard seed moment.

I am not recommending poverty when I share the following, but listen deep and think about the message it sends.
I have lost the name of the author of these words, but they could have been written by many,  "Take somebody ... who knows what it means to walk to school with a lunch wrapped up in a little brown greasy bag; somebody who knows what it means to be required to move but nowhere to move to; somebody who knows what it means to be forced to pay up but with nothing to pay down; somebody who knows what it means ’to wet their pillows with the midnight dew.’
“Take somebody like that, and you will find passion, you will find feeling. For people like that, God is real; they live on the edge. Life is not boring for those who know they are needy.”

The trail of on-going, consummate ease can make anyone bored…and yet it is so often a trail that is filled to overflowing.

Pure and simple…

We all need some days in which we do not just float but have to paddle.

Some of the most productive times of my life have been when I was not striving for security.

I remember back in the late 1950’s and through the 60’s, putting on the Easter Pageant in the Orange Bowl.  With the hard work and talent of a lot of people from all over this area, it was an anticipated annual event.  I was the director, writer… and on-board optimist.

Although it was sponsored by the Miami Ministerial Association, and much was donated to help hold down expenses, and even though we would have up to 70,000 people in attendance… We still had bills to pay - there was insurance, parking personnel, police, etc…and one year we began with only $17 in the bank.

So how did we raise the money each year? We passed the plate… but if you are part of 70,000 people you don’t know, it is easy to give nothing…and that’s what many gave…and then one year, to make matters worse, it rained.

Sheer lunacy?  Perhaps.  Complete faith?  Definitely!

But we sure weren’t bored.

I had been flying planes for years and one day I decided I would like to fly a glider.  From planes with motors I was going to learn how to fly a plane that was motorless.

Taken up in the air, you are cut lose at 3,000 feet and besides searching out updrafts to keep the plane afloat you also have to be sure to find the right place to land because you won’t have a second chance.

But I certainly wasn’t bored.

When I left a thriving 600 member church parish experience in Virginia to start a church here in Miami, there were 8 people in attendance the first Sunday morning in school auditorium that held 800.

I had to believe a lot.  I had to dream and hope a lot.  But I certainly wasn’t

bored.

We all need some days when we are to be challenged by something rather than on fire for nothing.

We all need days that cry out for deeds rather than living willy nilly.

Why are so many so bored with God and their faith and worship and the whole process?  Becaue that is what it has become...little more than a process.

And to find our spiritual selves, it must be more than that.

DON'T TRY TO SERVE TWO MASTERS...IT WON'T WORK

Matthew 6:24 doesn’t beat around the busy.  It reads, “No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other.”

There are three steps to Christian conversion.  First you fill your mind with facts. Who Christ was, what He did, what He said, who He influenced yesterday, today and will tomorrow.

Second, you learn some rules.  You pray some prayers, you love some enemies, you fertilize the soil of your soul.

Third, you say and mean, “Lord, here am I.  Take me.  Take my heart for here I feel the strongest and give the most.  When I give You this, You have all of me.”

John wrote in John 1:14  “And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.”

So just remember, you were made in the image of God, even when you are acting ungodly. The Psalmist says you are made a little less than divine.  No instrument that you can make can match the instrument that you are.  (rewrite of a statement by Wallace Hamilton)  Sometimes you may wonder, is there a heavenly book where your name is listed and your address given beneath it.

The great preacher, Harry Emerson Fosdick once said, “The man who spends a great deal of time trying to decide whether he wants to be married or a bachelor already has decided.”  Same thing with being a Christian.  If you spend a great deal of time trying to decide whether you really want to really be a Christian, you already have decided.

How does that 139th Psalm read?

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or wither shall I flee from thy presence?  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”
