"Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.”  Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. (Philippians 2:14-16)

When you complain rather than give thanks, have you ever asked yourself why you are doing it?

Has it become such a habit that you are well on your way to becoming a professional grumbler?

There is no doubt that the more we complain, the better we get at it.

And unfortunately, grumbling has been around for a long time – probably as long as humans have walked on this earth.

Walk along with the children of Israel, after Moses had led them out of bondage and into freedom, and consider their litany of complaints.

First they made it loud and clear that their feet were hurting – well they had been walking a long time and Moses didn’t seem to have his act together as to where this Promised Land was.

Then they grumbled that at least back in Egypt there had been wells - now there was a water shortage.

Then they found fault with the wilderness - just one big desert.  And even when there were trees they weren’t the right kind…you know the kind they were used to back in Egypt.

They’d been promised a Promise Land and it was definitely taking a great deal more time to find it than they were happy with.

Finally, they began to grumble that God had forgotten them.

With the passing of every day they got better and better at the art of whining.

And now we come face to face with human nature – we don’t learn from history.   It’s the 21st century and nothing has changed; grumbling, legitimate or otherwise, continues.

But bad as complaining is, sometimes complaint conversations can teach us a thing or two.  Listen in, you are about to have a short lesson in the benefits of complaining 101.

The young man had just been told that he had six months to live and of course, he was devastated.  “What can I do?  What can I do?” he kept saying over and over again.

The doctor thought about it for a bit and then said, “I think I have a solution.”

“Tell me.  Tell me,” demanded the young man.

“Well,” continued the doctor, “Go out and find the ugliest, most cantankerous, nagging woman you possibly can, a woman who will drive you crazy 24 hours a day and then marry her.

‘Then go out and buy a beat-up old car that wheezes when it runs and sometimes just stops for absolutely no reason at all.

‘Finally, move from where you now live and rent a house down wind of a paper mill where the smells are atrocious.

“Are you sure that will make me live longer?” asked the young man.

“No,” replied the doctor, “but it will make six months seem like a lifetime.”

TIME IS WONDERFUL!

What Are You Doing With it?

Ephesians 5:15-17.
Be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise.

Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days.

Don’t act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lords wants you to do.

In time, from the stretches of eternity…therein is God.  And therefore how you use this precious gift is of no small importance.

There is wasted time over which you really don’t have any control, such as: How much time do you spend waiting for a green light you just missed?  Or returning calls to people who are then never there when you return their call.

But what about the wasted time over which you do have control?  Those wasted minutes that will never exist again - a slice of eternity dropped as if worthless at your feet.

Charles Francis Adams, the 19th century political figure and diplomat, and son of John Quincy Adams and grandson of John Adams, kept a diary.  He had a superb family lineage but perhaps not always the best concept of what was worthy of his time for one day he penned: “Went fishing with my son today.  A day wasted.”

However, his son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is also still in  existence, and on that same day he made this entry, “Went fishing with my father.  The most wonderful day of my life!”

And therein lies part of the problem.  Are we capable of judging what is worthless or worthwhile when it comes to the use of that precious commodity called time?  Do we too often misjudge what is important or not important at all?

Do we need, on a regular basis, to prayerfully run our daily schedule by the throne of grace?  A kind of godly filtering to keep our thinking straight.  A prayer something like , “Lord, help me not to waste my life and help me to know the difference” rather than foolishly frittering away precious life portions with little or no concern.

I’ve got an 84th birthday coming up in a few days and like everyone else, I ask,

“Where did the time go?” But I also ask, “And what did I do with it while it was going?”

How much more earthly time do I have left?  I have no idea, but I do know that when one is young they feel they have forever to straighten their life out.

Speaking of wisely allocating time:  Each of you, when attending church, have made a conscious effort to straighten up your thinking.  And when you are there, challenge yourself to make the most of this worship time.

To pray deeply and not let your mind wander.

To sing whole heartily rather than mumble or not sing at all.

And as you drive home, will you apply what you have heard to your life, or will you think, What the preacher said had nothing to do with me.  Or even if it does, will you think, I’m certainly not going to re-arrange my way of living just because of what I heard.

How did the morning’s scripture begin… “Be careful how you live…”

So consider, how do you live?  Carefully with thoughtfulness - or carelessly because you couldn’t care less?

Proverbs 10:17 says, “Whoever practices discipline is on the way to life.”

Do you consider yourself disciplined?

Do you have a quiet time with God on a regular basis?  Filling your head and heart with the reality of an eternal God?  Is this kind of discipline for your soul a part of your time management?

Do you exercise consistently to build your muscles, and eat less to maintain a good body weight?  Is this kind of discipline for your body a part of your time management?

          Have you disciplined your habits?

Are you a habitual liar or a habitual truth teller?

Do you have the habit of saying “no” to all the opportunities to sin that come your way or do you often give in and give up when it comes to disciplining your daily actions?

A key difference between successful-in-life people and those who struggle to get by is self-discipline.

Disciplined folk don’t waste time.  Undisciplined folk squander far too much time accomplishing very little.  Successful-in-life people have formed the habits of doing those things that most people don’t want to do.

As Confucius wrote, “The nature of people is always the same; it is their habits that separate them.”

When Polish pianist Ignace Jan Paderewsky played before Queen Victoria, he won her enthusiastic approval. “Mr. Paderewsky,” she exclaimed, “you are a genius.” Paderewsky shook his head. “Perhaps, Your Majesty, but before that I was a drudge.”  Alluding to the years he had spent practicing and the number of hours he continued to spend practicing every day.

The writer Coleridge is the supreme example of a genius who wasted his writing talent by having a mind filled with all kind of books he never transcribed.

He was one of my favorite writers in college and as I read what little he did actually put to paper I would almost weep at his wasted life.

Discipline without some sacrifice is not discipline.  It’s a student studying when he had rather be enjoying the companionship of his fellow classmates.  It’s parents attending a PTA meeting when they’d rather be watching a movie.   It’s walking a mile or two when you’d rather sleep an extra hour.

Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

When you come to communion, there are what might be called four imperatives to give it meaning.  You have been given the choice; to accept all four, or three, or two, or one, or none and just go through the motions.

There is repentance - which allows you to use a mistake as a stepping stone instead of a stumbling block.  It is renouncing a bad yesterday for a better tomorrow.  How you define it is your choice.  Whether you repent or not is God’s imperative.

The second of the four imperatives I hope you bring to the communion table is overwhelming love for God and your fellowman.  Sometimes, for some people, it is easier to say, “I am sorry I was bad” than it is to love the neighbor you have been bad to.  To love the unlovely is a challenge, but that is exactly what partaking of Communion is…a challenge.

Third, having asked forgiveness for what you did that was wrong yesterday, what do you plan to do to improve how you life tomorrow?  It isn’t that God is not patient and loving.  You never use up some spiritual quota of forgiveness.  But a little honest effort at improvement would certainly be appreciated.

What criteria should you set up?  Well, questions such as: will you be a nicer person? Make your husband or wife happier?  Remember the commandments more readilyand follow them more often?  Those who work with you, will they be able to see a difference?

A story to make my point.  A young man when he called on a girl for their second date was approached by her father with the following question, “Well, what are your intentions, young man?”  The boy never moved so fast.  He was gone in a second and was down the street faster than can be described.  You see he didn’t have any intentions.

Some people have dates with the Lord but never have any intentions.

And yes, fourth - think about how often the word “way” is used in the Bible.  Hundreds of times.  “The way of the Lord is perfect.” (2nd Samuel)  “The way of the ungodly shall (to) perish.”  (1st Psalm)  The question, when it comes to communion and forgiveness and commitment…what are your intentions.

Do you think God gave you life so you could spend your days drowning in mediocrity?

Do I think God meant for me to take the easy way out until one day I would know no other way?  Is commitment a great word that everyone understands but few want to follow?

H.L. Mencken refused to be associated with any cause, any organization, any project, any person who was bogged down by mediocrity.  He believed that anything worth doing was worth doing right.

There is an answer to all of this you know.

Just go home and make a sign and hang it over your front door.  “All who live within are no worse than anyone else.”

And  any church can do the same, just paint a sign and hang it from the cross, “Our congregation is no worse than any other.

Michelangelo received, one day, a visit from a friend.  He was working on a sculptor and as far as the friend could see it was finished.

The next day, since his friend was still in town, he visited Michelangelo again.  He was still working on the sculptor.

Seeing no visible change he asked Michelangelo, “You haven’t been working on this same statue all this time, have you?”

“Indeed, I have,” answered the sculptor, “I’ve been retouching the facial features, refining the leg muscles, polishing the torso; I’ve softened the presentation of some areas and enhanced the eye’s expression.”

“But all those things are insignificant,” responded his friend, “They are mere trifles.”

“That may be,” replied Michelangelo, “ but trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.”

A young musician was deeply impressed by the skill of an older musician.  After praising the older man for what he had just heard he said, “It must be great to have all the practicing behind you and be able to simply sit down and play so magnificently.”

“Oh,” came back the reply, “I still practice eight hours a day.”

“But why,” exclaimed the young man.  “You are already great.”

“Thank you,” said the elderly violinist as he placed his violin in its case, “but you  see I’m not satisfied with being great.  I’m still working at being superb.”

I think this is what God wants you and I to do right up to our last day of life, work toward being superb.  Never achieving it, but also never giving up on it as a goal.  No not a goal, rather a mission.

Just remember, the last thing God wants us to do is call a personal garbage dump a garden, but people do it all the time.

Do it from the very beginning.  Have you ever watched four year olds dig in their heels when they know what they are doing is wrong but won’t admit it?

Human nature does that because to admit a wrong is to admit the need of change and people don’t like change.

Do you know what is the greatest enemy of excellence?  It is the willingness to be satisfied with good.  (paraphrase of a Zig Ziglar statement)

Most of you probably know the story of the Prodigal son which tells of a young man who was not looking for God, rather he was looking only for earthly happiness and earthly satisfaction.

What he found was a poverty of mind, body and soul   And why?  Because he was looking in the wrong places.

And it can happen to us when we ignore the feeding of our souls we ignore the truth  that “God…Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” (Augustine)

Let me put it this way - God has put eternity in our hearts and nothing will satisfy us until we recognize and acknowledge that this is true.  Though the idea of forever may stymie us, our total being is really more comfortable with eternity than with finite time.  This is why Jesus resurrected and by so doing left the message that we should accept our living after we die with as much readiness as we accept our living before we die.

Hear the words of King David for whom an earthly kingdom was not enough, “…O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1)

If you are honest with yourself, would you say, “I truly want to grow spiritually” or, would you add an addendum. “…but just not right now.”

In short, it can be said that you are, at this moment, about as spiritual as you want to be.  And for some of you that may mean - you believe in God but you don’t want to overdo it.

Maybe you who are still relatively young, and have too often thought to yourself, Some day in my old age I will automatically become more spiritual.  When I will find myself more often counting the years and making “Nearer my God to thee” my theme song.  Then I will become more spiritual.

But why wait?  If it is important in the closing years of life, why is it less than important in the early and middle stages of life?

And if you are already in those closing years, hopefully you have arrived at this conclusion…and are practicing and seeking and finding that great gift - a blessed overwhelming confidence in Almighty God.

And if that is true, some scriptures have become a constant echo.

Psalm 118:6, The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Every person has a relationship with God –

either as a spiritual anarchist in rebellion

or a halfhearted follower in lukewarm acceptance

or a believer in all out dedication.

What I’m talking about is seeking and finding Spiritual Summer in the Son.

That’s “S-o-n” not “s-u-n.”  The warmth that only an invigorated faith can give.

What I am talking about is a confidence in God that grows because you exercise that confidence on a regular basis.  An unwavering trust.

If you trust a person you are prone to take their advice.  The same is true with the Lord; trust the words of better living wisdom in the Old and New Testament, and live by them.

Proverbs 3:5-6 puts it clearly enough,  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Let’s put it this way, “If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be sufficient evidence to convict you?”

Pass this test and heaven becomes not just a place you will go to one day, rather some of that heavenly peace and prosperity will now come to you here on mother earth.

Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

There are many who make light of  Christians gathering together on a Sunday morning for worship, but I chastise them for their chastisement.  And, in so doing, I remind them that they never get up any morning that they do not worship something.

There is no human being alive who does not worship something.  Nature abhors a vacuum.  It may well be things worthy of worship but nevertheless it is worship...wealth, power... add to the list as you will.

As you have celebrated communion I would trust you have been overwhelmed with gratitude that God does not care if you are as stubborn as a mule, as mean as a wild cat or as stupid as an ox.  All He cares is that you are His child, and for you He died on a cross, and that at such a time as this, you let its meaning sink in.

The next time you try to define communion to yourself, or someone else, think of it as something that does not so much define what God does as who God is.  And what is that?  Well, at the communion table He is downright Teutonic in that He forgives a wretch like you and me.

And why do I say Teutonic?  Because in that language the word wretch meant “wanderer.”  And that is what each of us is whenever we to come to the communion table; a wanderer, a prodigal son or daughter, a lost sheep.

And what we bring to this table is hope.

“Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you peace.”  “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.” (Psalm 31:24)  “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith.  If you see faith as a verb rather than a noun, as an active force that helps you to go in the right direction more often than the wrong, then your faith is that proverbial rock upon which to build your house.

And what I hope you never bring to the communion table is the feeling that to win out in life you have to do it all by yourself.

By way of example, let me tell you a story about the great magician Houdini.  As you most likely know this great escape artist claimed there was no jail in America that could hold him, and he always proved he was right.  Until, one day, he was locked in a jail in a small mid western town where everything went terribly wrong.  It was very cold, below freezing really, and when the jail cell doors clanged shut he hoped he would be able to get out in record time because despite his self-discipline he was most uncomfortable.  Left to himself, he extracted from a secret place in his belt a small piece of metal, strong and flexible.  Then time lengthened and he could not pick the lock. He grew frantic.  It was two hours and his fingers were stiff and no longer functioning very well.  Soon he was bathed in sweat and feeling increasingly miserable but still the lock would not open.  Finally in frustration he leaned against the door and as he did it swung open.  It had never been locked.

That is the message of the communion table.  Christ has come to the door of your soul and unlocked it.  It doesn’t take any special magic to open it.  All you have to do is open it yourself and welcome Him in.
