"Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.”  Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. (Philippians 2:14-16)

When you complain rather than give thanks, have you ever asked yourself why you are doing it?

Has it become such a habit that you are well on your way to becoming a professional grumbler?

There is no doubt that the more we complain, the better we get at it.

And unfortunately, grumbling has been around for a long time – probably as long as humans have walked on this earth.

Walk along with the children of Israel, after Moses had led them out of bondage and into freedom, and consider their litany of complaints.

First they made it loud and clear that their feet were hurting – well they had been walking a long time and Moses didn’t seem to have his act together as to where this Promised Land was.

Then they grumbled that at least back in Egypt there had been wells - now there was a water shortage.

Then they found fault with the wilderness - just one big desert.  And even when there were trees they weren’t the right kind…you know the kind they were used to back in Egypt.

They’d been promised a Promise Land and it was definitely taking a great deal more time to find it than they were happy with.

Finally, they began to grumble that God had forgotten them.

With the passing of every day they got better and better at the art of whining.

And now we come face to face with human nature – we don’t learn from history.   It’s the 21st century and nothing has changed; grumbling, legitimate or otherwise, continues.

But bad as complaining is, sometimes complaint conversations can teach us a thing or two.  Listen in, you are about to have a short lesson in the benefits of complaining 101.

The young man had just been told that he had six months to live and of course, he was devastated.  “What can I do?  What can I do?” he kept saying over and over again.

The doctor thought about it for a bit and then said, “I think I have a solution.”

“Tell me.  Tell me,” demanded the young man.

“Well,” continued the doctor, “Go out and find the ugliest, most cantankerous, nagging woman you possibly can, a woman who will drive you crazy 24 hours a day and then marry her.

‘Then go out and buy a beat-up old car that wheezes when it runs and sometimes just stops for absolutely no reason at all.

‘Finally, move from where you now live and rent a house down wind of a paper mill where the smells are atrocious.

“Are you sure that will make me live longer?” asked the young man.

“No,” replied the doctor, “but it will make six months seem like a lifetime.”
