If you are a parent you know how hard it is to watch
one of your children suffer. And even more so if one of them dies - we lost a
grandchild 15 years ago. Consider this
as you think of God watching His son Jesus die and not an easy death. All planned out and proclaimed as something
that was going to happen. Jesus and the
Upper Room and His disciples listening but unwilling to believe.
“God so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son.” That’s the way it
reads. That’s the way it is. Our relationship with God is possible for
only one reason, His love for us. His
love for us…ah yes, “…he takes the blame…he covers the shame…he removes the
stain…he makes beauty where no beauty reigned.”
(Rewrite of writings by an anonymous writer)
The young
soldier was a deserter and Napoleon ordered that he be shot. His mother continued to plea for the life of
her son, “Please have mercy on him,” she cried.
“He doesn’t deserve mercy,” came back Napoleons reply. There was a moment of silence and the woman
grew strangely quiet. Then in a voice
that was hardly more than a whisper she looked into the eyes of the leader of
her land and said, “If he deserved it, it would not be mercy.”
What God gives is a gift of mercy because
we do not deserve it but He gives it anyway.
How does the Psalmist put it, “For as high as the heavens are above the
earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.” (Psalm 103:11)
Have you ever collected and restored
antiques? We haven’t, but I admire
people who do. People who can take some
old table, chair or bookcase, that looks beyond redemption, and make it a thing
of beauty. Scrape off old coats of paint
or varnish. Bring out all of the beauty
that once was there.
I think this is God and this
is man. We are all, on our first day of
birth, wide-eyed and innocent, and then as we grow older temptation comes to
call, and weakness answers the door. We
pile up our sins of omission and commission and daily acquire overlays of
unworthiness, and what does God do? He
looks at us and accepts us as we are; dents, scratches and imperfections - one
and all. Restores us by His redeeming
grace. Brings us back to Him to be loved
and fathered and forgiven.
Am I
saying that when we accept God’s love we become
restored antiques? Yes, in a way, I
believe that is exactly what I am saying.
The book of Ephesians describes this antique restoration so very
well, “…once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light.” (Ephesians
5:8)

powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understaning and appreciation of
Lincoln...(Lt. Colonel C.A.Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"Wyrick has
authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American
history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that
has a rich depth of information.
(Maynard Pittendreigh, Presbyterian Minister)
"THE SPIRITUAL
ABRAHAM LINCOLN is an extremely well written book...it is both scholarly and
very readable. I came away impressed at
Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of that President with an altered and enlarged vision of
the man. (William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer, author of Blood and
Guile, and Wild Thorn.)
