Christianity
doesn’t make good sense This business of
thinking of other people before yourself.
Giving away money instead of keeping it.
Sacrificing time and energy in some idiotic expression of
benevolence. Wearing out your heart and
head over other people’s problems when you have enough of your own. The only thing that makes sense is
selfishness. Get all you can. Keep all you can. Let the other fellow get by as best he can. Create your own private little corporation of
greed and selfishness.
And
there are those who would acclaim with pride that this is where they stand.
But then...
There are three divine imperatives in the
Christian faith and they do make consummate good sense.
The three divine imperatives
are justice, love and mercy.
These three divine imperatives do ideed make
good sense but what doesn’t make good sense is our refusal to too often practice them. We certainly can’t
blame ignorance for our behavior. We know enough about Christ divine
imperatives. It’s the "not doing"
that doesn’t make sense. Or as man named
Chesterton commented, “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult and not tried.”
Put it this way. “For all practical purposes (and please note
the word practical) a man’s real god is what he finds pleasure in thinking
about, zest in pursuing and satisfaction in obeying.
You know why more Christians
don’t act like it and in the process inspire more non-Christians? Well, I think sometimes we’re so busy
claiming the rest of the world is going to the dogs we forget to examine our
own kennel.
Despite
our faults and our weaknesses Christianity is still alive because generation
after generation have kept it alive. It made sense. It
makes sense. And we certainly
don’t want to be like the teenager who while dusting the living room one
Saturday morning shouted outside to his mother on the porch, “Mom, you remember
that vase which has been in the family for generations? Well, this generation just dropped it.” And the church
could/should grow more.
It is the year 2012 and the Lord
looks down and asks, “Who will speak for me?”
And thousands answer back, “I will listen to words about you but I will
not speak out for you.” And others
answer, “I am young and vital and far too busy with other things. Wait until I get older and have more
time.” And those already older say, “I
am old and tired, ask the young.”
What do you believe? And how stubbornly do you believe it? The Psalmist writes, “If the foundations be
destroyed, what have the righteous been about?”

"Wyrick has
authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American
history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that
has a rich depth of information.
(Maynard Pittendreigh, Presbyterian Minister)
"THE SPIRITUAL
ABRAHAM LINCOLN is an extremely well written book...it is both scholarly and
very readable. I came away impressed at
Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of that President with an altered and enlarged vision of
the man. (William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer, author of Blood and
Guile, and Wild Thorn.)
