Humility practices the compassion of listening…even to a fool…and if his comments are not hurting anyone ...allowing him to walk away not once again carrying the condemnation that usually follows his comments...

Humility is not easily practiced nor easily kept… for pride constantly looks for an opportunity to stamp on it and crush it into the ground.

But seek it consistently for without it there is the chance you will become a slave to your pride.  And in so doing, become a consummate bore and with a prickly presence.

Now that you have heard these stories, and perhaps understand better the question I put before you a few phrases ago (last tuesday)... allow me to ask you the question again

What is the most important discovery in your life? Do you answer along with Dr. Simpson, “My most valuable discovery was when I discovered myself a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Savior” ?

And can you claim with Nelson Mandela, Free at last! Free from the strangling, horrific hold that arrogance and pride may have had upon your life.

Are you now ready to turn your life over to new management and through Christ, our Lord and Savior, practice the love and concern He so often taught?

If you have already...then you know what COMPLETE COMMITMENT to your faith is all about...

....well, why haven’t you?

Let's face it...you are not going rid of your life of the causes of anxiety; there will always be rumors of wars and wars themselves, everything from nation to nation to person to person.

But you can achieve control over your anxieties and sometimes an eradication of these bugaboos of the brain.

I speak from recent personal experience.  A broken hip should b e a first class factory of anxiety production but I give you my word.  My anxiety factory has worked undertime as against overtime and I credit my Lord and a backlog of faith that charged to the forefront and treated me well.

I've done this more than once...indeed my wife has always said "The bigger the problem the better you handle it."

First, on the list for eclipsing or at least shrinking your anxiety is "Thanksgiving."

Make a list you are thankful for and check them twice.  It certainly beats having a pity party or a crying jag.

That's when emotions gone out of control take you where you don't want to go.

In short, don't get into playing the "What if?" game or "What was?"  Deal with the good "What is?" truths.

Your left arm is paralyzed (I've been there)?  Become an expert on right arm accomplishments.  (My left never has regained all it'strengh or mobility.)

You can't walk as well as once you could or not at all?  Say a thanksgiving prayer for your limp or the invention  of the wheel chair does give you mobility, not the kind you would like but still mobility.

You are having a vision problems, hearing problems, I haven't the time to name all the problems flesh can grow heir to but whatever is your problem...accentuate the positive ...otherwise the negative will accentuate on you.

I've used this Emma Bombeck story before but it is too good a story not to use again as we look at a prime example of how easy it is to worry about things that are a complete waste of time to worry about.

It is about a little boy named Donald and his attitude towards the first day of school.

"My name is Donald. I don't know anything. I have new underwear, a loose tooth, and I didn't sleep last night because I'm worried. What if a bell rings and a man yells, 'Where do you belong,' and I don't know?

What if the trays in the cafeteria are too tall for me to reach?

What if my loose tooth comes out when we have our heads down and are supposed to be quiet?

Am I supposed to bleed quietly?

What if I splash water on my nametag and my name disappears and no one knows who I am?"

Now, yes, I am aware that there are hormonal and chemical reasons for some people's anxieties and I definitely believe they should avail themselves of proper medicines that give relief.

Still, for all of the most of us, we need to turn to the great heavenly physician.

One church sign put it well. It read, "If your knees are knocking, kneel on them."

One person defined anxiety as a gap between one's demands and one's resources.

I have a new opportunity for anxiety.  I have a new computer with a new program Windows 7.  For  a brief time I was prepared to call it Wall 8 because it was blocking sermons and articles and anything else I was writing.

For a little while I was like Donald.  I didn't just make a mountain out of a molehill.  I started planting trees.

I forgot for a moment a rather basic truth...keep things in proportion.  I prayed about it and Christ and common sense came charging in to slow my anxiety down...but for a bit I fed foolishness and earned what it gave me in return.

I've heard anxiety called " unconscious blasphemy."  That's strong meat but think about it, if we can't pray and mean "Lord, thy will be done" and mean it because we trust the creator of our life both here and in the hereafter then that lack of trust really is a bit of blasphemy.

HOW MUCH DOES A PRAYER WEIGH?

Why do you pray?  As a spiritual catharsis?  To get it, whatever it is, off your chest?  To talk it out with God, but not see it through?  Or, yes…see it through?

Do you pray for your children and grandchildren that God might help them to be good and avoid the many temptations all around?  Did you pray with equal fervor that He might help you to set a better example?

Not long ago, I read of a boy who had broken his parent’s hearts.  There were rules and regulations in the home but he felt they had no application to him.  So he broke them.

Therefore, his parents banished him to the attic after dinner every evening.  Here the roof would provide protection from the elements and the floor would provide a place to sleep.  It would not be home, but perhaps this would teach him a lesson.  The first night, however, his father lay restless in his comfort able bed and could not sleep.  So half-way through the night, he gathered up his blanket, climbed the attic steps and for that night and through succeeding nights, he slept beside his boy sharing his exile.

This is God and prayer.  God sharing our exile when sometimes we are the ones who have decreed the exile.

The Psalmist writes “Whither shall I go from Thy spirit?  Or whither shall I flee from Thy presence?  If I ascend up to heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there.”  (Psalm 139:8)

There is no time nor place you cannot pray.  If you exile yourself to bars, God is there.  If you wrap yourself in self-pity, God is there.  If you are singing songs at your wedding, God is there.  If you are weeping at the loss of a loved one, God is there.  Your pain is His pain, your joy His joy, your sin His burden to bear.

Just remember that “Prayer is not conquering God's reluctance, but taking hold of God's willingness. “  --Phillips Brooks29

One of the most stupid things a man or woman can do to their immortal soul is to put that soul on a diet when it comes to God.  And that is what not praying is.

Jesus warns all of us about being lukewarm which I guess means that if we were to take our spiritual temperature we need to be able to record somewhat of a spiritual fever.

During the civil war President Abraham Lincoln said, “Again and again, I am driven to my knees.  There is no other place to go.”

Ultimately, that is what it is all about.  When it comes to our place in time there is nowhere quite like showing up at the foot of eternity.  Nothing like having a conversation with Him who in the beginning created heaven and earth, and you and me.

Prayer gets down to the basics.  St. Augustine didn’t beat around the bush in trying to explain.  He said “A person prays that he himself may be constructed, not that God may be instructed.”

True prayer is life’s most honest moment.  You may lie to people; put up a front, make excuses, practice double standards, but a true prayer takes you before the throne of Grace, and here you and your God take a good look at who you really are and who you could truly be.

In closing, consider the truth that true, life-changing prayer is a discipline.  Not an occasional.  Not something that you agree is good, but seldom practice.

Rather, believe the following with James who wrote, and it can be found in the book of James, 4th chapter 8th verse;

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”

When a company takes over another company, there is often a sign placed outside the premises announcing, UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT.

Such a sign accurately summarizes what takes place in Christian conversions. When Christ takes over a life, that life is literally under new management.

So consider,.. is God now managing your pride?  Or is your pride still managing you?

If you were asked,What is the most important discovery or accomplishment in your life?” how would you answer the question?

In the year 1847, a doctor from Edinburgh, Sir James Simpson, discovered that chloroform could be used as an anesthetic to render people insensible to the pain of surgery.

From his early experiments, Dr. Simpson made it

possible for people to go through the most dangerous operations without fear of pain and suffering.

His was one of the most significant discoveries of modern medicine.

But some years later, while lecturing at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Simpson was asked by one of his students, What do you consider to be the most valuable discovery of your lifetime?”

To the surprise of his students, who had expected him to refer to chloroform, Dr. Simpson replied, “My most valuable discovery was when I discovered myself a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Saviour.”

What great a favor humility can do to and for society.

       How?

It encourages co-operation and respect for other human beings.

A prime example of a humble person is Nelson Mandela. This was a man who suffered almost 30 years of imprisonment for the cause he supported.

On his elevation to the Presidency of South Africa in 1994, Mandela said, "I stand before you filled with deep pride and joy:  pride in the ordinary, humble people of this country - you have shown such a calm, patient determination to reclaim this country as your own; and joy that we can loudly proclaim from the rooftops - Free at last!"

This speech was absolutely filled with humility, words

spoken by a man who thought only of the people;

fought beside them, shared their fate and did not seek to rise above them, but stayed one of them.

Mandela's humility brought him world-wide acclaim; placing him alongside the likes of Mother Theresa and Ghandi.

Humility shakes the hands of the homeless rather than cast in his or her direction a look of disdain.

There is certainly ample opportunity for that here in

downtown churches ...in particular when an homeless man or woman comes to  a worship service on a Sunday morn, and then goes back to join members for lunch...

Do you walk over and give a verbal welcome...

or shake his hand...or...just gravitate to friends...the ole comfort zone you know?

...Ah yes, it’s well to remember the story about the little girl who questioned her wealthy father praying to God to help his neighbor by saying, “"But daddy, you can help himself yourself."
