 CAIAPHAS (John 18:14)

CAIAPHAS was the chief prosecutor and high priest of the Sanhedrin who said to Nicodemus that "it was expedient that one man (Jesus) should die for the people."
He also argued that because of the miracles Jesus was performing "the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation."

He spoke nobly, but his real motives were for power motivated by personal animosity. Actually, he did not appreciate Jesus' constant moral comments.
Being a member of Sanhedrin he believed that if a moral law was not written down it had no divine authority.

Nor was he, or members of that sect, believers in resurrection after death, or reward or punishment after a man died. And greed played its part as well.
His father-in-law, Annas. owned the money changers that were driven out of the temple.

The final conflict was a given. Nor should any be surprised that when Caiaphas asked Jesus, " ..... Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" than Jesus replied. 'I am and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One (God) and coming on the clouds of heaven." (Mark: 14:61-62)
HEROD .ANTIPAS (Luke 9:7)

Herod was a child of Cleopatra -a native of Jerusalem, one of Herod the Greats five wives.

He was the tetrarch of Galilee, a gift of Augusta Caesar as his share of his father's estate.

On the whole he was willing to do anything to advance the power of his rulership; even offering to spy on his own brothers as well as Roman officials.

Pilate, looking for a scapegoat, wanted Herod to sentence Jesus.

In other words, do his dirty work for him. However, Herod already had the beheading of John the Baptist on his conscience and he did not need any more such actions added to his resume' .

In later years, all did not go well for Herod Antipas. After the death of the Roman emperor,

Tiberius. the new emperor, Caligula, had him banished. Until this untimely ending be had ruled over Galilee for forty plus years.

We celebrated the 235th anniversary of the birth of our country in 2011.  A nation, that by all common sense, should never have been.  It won a war it should never have been won - no army, no navy, a group of ragtag citizens armed with little more than sticks and dreams.

And when the war was finally won, fifty-five very diverse men gathered together to set down on paper an example of freedom that would be a beacon for centuries yet to come.  Sweltering in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall in temperatures that sometimes rose to 125°, they disagreed on just about everything; argued and grew so angry their number finally shrank to thirty-nine.

It looked impossible, until a man named George Washington, rose and humbly said, “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest may repair.  Put this event in the hands of God.”

A mustard seed moment.

And then not that long afterwards, old Ben Franklin quietly petitioned for prayer that tempers might be quieted and the grace and power of Almighty God might prevail.

Another mustard seed moment.

Yes, how wonderfully, impossibly improbable can be the actions of we human beings when we let the Lord of love take over.

DOES DISCOURAGEENT MAKE A BIG DENT IN YOUR LIFE?

It was a moment of inspirational genius when Ted Engstrom wrote the following:

Cripple him, and you have a Sir Walter Scott.

Lock him in a prison cell, and you have a John Bunyan.

Bury him in the snows of Valley Forge, and you have a General George Washington.

Strike him down with infantile paralysis, and you have a Franklin Delano Roosevelt who goes on to become President.

Burn him so severely that the doctors say he’ll never walk again, and you have a Glenn Cunningham who went on to set a world record by running a four minute mile in 1934.

Deafen him and you have a Ludwig van Beethoven who continued to compose great music even when he could no longer hear it.

Have him or her born black in a society filled with racial discrimination, and you have a Booker T. Washington, a Marian Anderson, a George Washington Carver, a Martin Luther King.

Call him a slow learner, retarded, and write him off as uneducable, and you have an Albert Einstein.

Which is to say; life is about 20% what happens to us and 80% the way we respond to what happens to us.

Everyone gets discouraged from time to time, it is just that when it happens, some remember and believe that “All things turn out for good to those who love God.” Romans 8:28.

Do you want to handle your discouragements rather than have them handle you?

Look up toward the stars more often than you look down at dragging feet.

And when blocked in one direction, change your direction.  You may find it better than the direction you were wasting your time on.

NICODEMUS (Jobn 3:1-21)

This Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin is first noted in the Bible visiting Jesus for the purpose of learning more about His doctrines. NICODEMUS met with Him under cover of night so no one would know he was a follower.

It was during this teaching time that Jesus emphasized the importance of "being born again."

He is next encountered in the Sanhedrin where he mildly protests when they are plotting against Christ. It is before these men that Christ was tried for blasphemy.

Sanhedrin means the setting together or council. First instituted by Moses and composed of70 men.

It is frequently used in the New Testament to denote the supreme judicial and administrative council of the Jews. Its decrees were binding not only on the Jews in Palestine but on those scattered abroad. Its usual place of meeting was within the precincts of the Temple, in the hall Nazareth, but also sometimes it met in the house of the high priest.

As to the Sanhedrin member, Nicodemus, he is mentioned one last time as taking part in the preparation of the anointing and burial of the body of Christ (John 19:39).

ZACCHAEUS (Luke 19:2-10) ZACCHAEUS was "chief among the publicans" which meant that when it came time to collect taxes in the district, he was the man in charge. Because ofhis wealth, and the reputation for dishonesty that all tax collector carried, he was not a man who had won any recent popularity contests.

Though determined to see Jesus, he was a small individual and could not break through the crowd that surrounded Him when He was passing through Jericho. So Zacchaeus did the next best thing. ran ahead of the mob and climbed a sycamore tree.

It worked. Jesus saw him and said, " ... Zacchaeus, come down immediately; I must stay at thy house today."

It was an action by Jesus that drew an immediate negative response. The crowd did not like Zacchaeus. Therefore, they expected the same response from Christ. Immediately on the defensive, Zacchaeus cried out, "Lord, the half of my good I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man  by false accusation, I restore him four fold."

The crowd wasn't convinced, but Jesus saw beyond what they saw. He saw into th~ heart of Zacchaeus and with compassion comforted him by saying, "Today salvation has come to this house ... for the Son of man came to seek and save what was lost."

You may never write a hymn that is still sung centuries after you die.  You may never be acclaimed by the masses.  But one by one, Christians who follow our Lord’s teaching do make this world a better place to live.  And make happen one mustard seed moment after the other.

I chose this mustard seed scripture because it tells us that if we want impossible things to happen, we have to chase down and capture an impossible faith.  The kind of faith that leads others to ask, “How did you do it?”

You see, a mustard seed really is terribly small, so insignificant it takes hundreds of them to make just a gram.  And if a man’s eyes are not good, he has to actually put on glasses to be able to see it.  But infinitesimal as it is, when planted, this tiny seed grows into a tree.

So mustard seed moments may often seem quite mundane, but the circumstances derived from such moments are never mundane.  They have an explosive quality about them.  They shout!  That’s why those who know from personal experience call what the Bible has to teach…DYNAMITE.

Take the example of a tax collector named Matthew.  Who would have expected him to give up such a lucrative position and follow a poor Nazarene?  A rather futile move, some must have thought.  But the mustard seed moment was there waiting, and he became one of the chosen Twelve.

And John was a fisherman making a good living doing what he liked, until he gave it all up to follow the Master.  I’m sure some of his friends probably commented, “He’s out there following some ne’er-do-well called Jesus.  I don’t believe it.”  But believe it, for that is what happened.  A mustard seed moment and he too became one of the chosen Twelve.

And all the other ten chosen to be Christ’s Disciples had their mustard seed moments.

Thomas Edison when fired from his job on the railroad went on to become one of our greatest inventors/ scientists.

Abraham Lincoln, at 46, considered himself a failure.  He had certainly built up a history of failure; failed storekeeper, failed in attempts to be elected to political office, etc.  He went on to become President of these United States.

Dr. A. J. Cronin began his work as a doctor, broke his health and retired to write.  He became one of the world’s greatest and most beloved writers.

Whistler, the great artist, wanted to be a soldier, but failed in a chemical examination.  He often laughed and said, “If silicon had been a gas, I would have been a major general.

The medical missionary David Livingstone, after 16 years in Africa, was quoted as saying the following during a visit to Glasgow University.  “Shall I tell you what sustained me amidst the toil and hardship of my exiled life?  It was Jesus’ promise, ‘Lo, I am with you always even unto the end.’”

As he spoke, he appeared much older than his actual age and his arm hung limply at his side – the result of a lion attack.  And this man, who never thought of giving anything less than his all, gave forth an unworldly calm.

His dedication to a cause was greater than any discouragement that could come to call.  He judged life not by minor moments when things would seem to fall apart but by a total picture.

He saw life as a destiny not as a piecemeal of ups and downs.

To better understand Jesus and the earthly world in which He lived,

 THE APOSTLES

OF THE MANY WHO FOLLOWED JESUS, HE CHOSE ONLY TWELVE TO BE HIS APOSTLES

Twelve Minus One

MARY MAGDALENE (Luke8:2-3) This MARY was thus identified because she was from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Next to His mother, she was the closest woman to Jesus, and she was to the women who followed Jesus what Peter was to the men.

Without fear. she was with Him at the cross. It was she to whom He appeared first after the resurrection. Despite the fact that popular opinion often still infers she was a fallen and repentant woman, Biblical scholars say she was a woman of means and held a high position in society.
It is unthinkable that Jesus would have chosen a prostitute as a leader in His group. What is important is that she was an educated woman whose intellect did not get in the way of her recognizing Jesus for who He was.

The word educated woman has definite meaning when one realizes that she was raised under the influence of her father who was a wealthy Greek ship owner who also taught Platonic philosophy. Once she met Jesus. she never wavered in her devotion or belief. She accompanied Him on His last journey from Galilee to Jerusalem and after the Crucifixion helped prepare His body for entombment.
SALOME (Matthew 27:55-56)

Biblical scholars largely agree that the name of the Mother of James and John was SALOME. Do not confuse her with the dancing girl with the same name. Conjecture teaches that she was probably the sister of Mary. the Mother of Jesus.

Even though accounts of her in the Gospels is scant, it is evident that she, like her sons. was a devoted follower of Jesus. And. yes. she was at both the crucifixion and the entombment.
