RUST ON MY SOUL (A Novel) (Published by Bridge Press in 1985 & Distributed Internationally)

INTRODUCTION (Repeated for those new to the series)

In an old loose leaf notebook, Thomas Kettering wrote when there was a cry from his heart. He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step.

******************************

Evening

I’m seeing a me I don’t like. Where has my vision been before this. Have I been rewriting any part of me that might bother me until it didn’t bother me anymore.

Faces. That’s what people have always been to me. Noses and mouths and mustaches and tags. I recognize hundreds of people, but I don’t know any of them. They have been receiving that portion of my personality that was required.

I just wrote out a check to the fellow who mows my lawn. For more than three years I've been doing that and I don't even know I if he’s married or has kids or what he does in his spare time. I haven't really cared so I never asked.

The executive who puts his name to a one-hundred-thousand-dollar contract today, I know his wife's name and what his two daughters and one son have achieved. I know that he hates golf and loves handball. There was profit in our association so I cared enough to find out.

Do I have to love everyone?

Right now I would feign and be phony if I tried to show more interest in people.

I've still a price tag on my time and an unwillingness to fritter away the precious moments on just anyone.

But if you, my Jesus, could take time for a little boy with too few fish, and pay tribute to a widow and her mite, and a dirty blind beggar, I do think it means I have to become aware of the people in my world.

It doesn't mean that I have to visit with the winos on skid row or strike up a conversation with everyone I meet on the street, but I do think it means I have to shake more hands rather than just wave from afar.

Will you brighten up the dim light of my concern, Lord?

An I just whistling in the wind or do I have the emotional and spiritual gumption to actually do something about all this?

Recently posted was a serialization from another book SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING

This book, SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING, is about dealing positively with the challenges of getting older and fosters the belief that “If we would have new knowledge, we must get a world of new questions.” (Susanne K. Langer)

“I am come that they (you) may have life and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

Anyone who lives long enough gets older. There are no other options. How we handle the adventure is filled with options.

Keep both eyes on life, and not on the calendar. Admit your age, but don’t admit to the fallacy that you have to act like it. Saying, “I’m 39 and holding,” is more tragic than humorous because it argues that age has no attributes.

V. Neil Wyrick

Below a quote from it…
“Be like the farmer who, when asked what he was building, replied, “if I can rent it, it’s a rustic cottage. If I can’t, it’s a cow shed.”
It’s called attitude and it can make us prematurely old or longer young. For truly, things aren’t just what they are, but rather how we choose to see them.”

*****************************************
Below is a quote from Wyrick’s writings blog entitled ANGER VS. PATIENCE

“After the old man had departed, God called out to Abraham and asked where the stranger was. Abraham replied, “I sent him on his way because he did not worship you.”

God answered “I have suffered him all his eighty years although he dishonors me. Could you not endure for just one night?”

God suffers us, endures us! And forgives us and loves us and sets such a perfect example for us.”

(1st in series) (on this Wyrick’s Writing blog)

I have always been intrigued by a question God put to Adam, “Where are you?” Why did He ask that? What is the meaning behind this? It wasn’t a geographical question, for certainly God knew the answer to that one.

BELOW IS A QUOTE FROM A NEW SERIES “Depression…the Alien Within” on this Wyrick’s Writings …

”Sometimes the best thing do, if depression descends on you, is for a little while to try to wipe clean the slate of your worried mind. To give such thoughts some muted silence. Seek an emotional whiteout. Just let the soft breeze of nothingness blow for a while. And then, read John 14:27 and hear Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Do you enjoy visiting friends? More than likely you’re thinking, Preacher, of course, I do.  Now let me ask the other side of the coin - Do you enjoy visiting enemies? No?

Well, I know you must enjoy visiting at least one enemy because, like myself, you probably visit this one quite often. Unfortunately, we all …visit this enemy…whose name is anger.

Some visit anger seldom . Some on a regular basis. And during those visits, some spew and others stew.”

“If you would live long, live well; for folly and wickedness shorten life.”

ATTITUDE

“A negative or positive state of mind.”

“…to be made new in the attitude of your minds.”
Ephesians 4:23 (NIVG)

DON’T GET HUNGH UP ON A HANG UP

The great baseball pitehcer of yesterday, Sachel Page once said, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”

Which is really asking, is your calendar an enemy as well as a convenience? Are their insights that can help one to meet the morning with a grin more often than a growl? Is it important to believe that age and senility are not necessarily bosom buddies?

In the late 1900’s Chancellor Otto Von Bismark started the whole idea that 65 is automatically old.

There was no scientific study to prove this mathematical assertion. Rather, it grew out of a German job market that had younger workers standing out in the cold. Then, during the great depression, when our Congress instituted the Social Security System, this arbitrary age was accepted as if it were an edict from on high.

But now we are living infinitely longer. And if we survive to sixty-five statistics promise another decade and a half. Therefore, we have to consider retiring to something rather than simply from something. A now I can, why not attitude.

Take sleep for example. After retirement you are no longer a slave to an alarm clock. But now that you don’t have to go to work do you find yourself waking up early anyway? You feel cheated? Don’t. Feel blessed. You now have more time for doing.

“But it also gives me more time to be bored,” said one fellow at a seminar. To which I replied that you can’t expect interesting things to just happen. They won’t come knocking at your door. You must plan your day, or you have planed your day.

In the past necessity may have made you follow a job that took care of your pocketbook but killed your fantasies. Give them life again!

Get yourself some paints and become an artist, even though forty years ago it was too impractical.

Join an amateur drama group, if this was once your dream.

Sign up Habitat for Humanity and build a house.

Join a bowling league.

Serve lunch to the homeless.

Don’t say I have nothing to do. Beef up your choices until your cup is full. Growing old doesn’t have to mean being less active, just active in different ways.

“I’ve planned a Beautify My Life campaign,” said one bright-eyed seventy year old.

“I plan to keep on working, just not as much.”

“I plan to trade in a large home for a larger income.”

The MAGIC word is DO.

Are you willing to take a test?

If so, take out a piece of paper and make a quick drawing of how you see yourself.

Did you draw a picture of someone up and going, or a picture of some torpid creature in a darkened room isolated from the light of life?

Did you draw a picture with a musical note above your head to show there is a song in your heart, or a thunder cloud hovering over your head?

We are how we see ourselves And yes, a positive-self-image can improve mental and physical health. Indeed I love a poster I once saw that read, “Go ahead and touch me. Wrinkles aren’t contagious.”

I recently got into a conversation with a man and his wife in an airport and he told me, “California redwood s are old. Mountains are old Me? I’m just a kid.”

His wife added, “I’m getting old (she was 78) but I’ll probably die before I make it.”

Do I suggest being unabashedly positive and traveling as often as possible down a sunshine road?

Without reservation the answer is a resounding YES! Think spring, not fall. Grow some new leaves. Make retirement or semi-retirement a friend and not an enemy. Better still, a window of opportunity.

Be like the farmer who, when asked what he was building, replied, “if I can rent it, it’s a rustic cottage. If I can’t, it’s a cow shed.”

It’s called attitude and it can make us prematurely old or longer young. For truly, things aren’t just what they are, but rather how we choose to see them.

There are the parents who constantly find fault with their children and then wonder why the look of wonder leaves their eyes. And I think perhaps God weeps when he hears a parent do nothing but carp or criticize.

And since the average mother actually communicates with her child thirty minutes in a days time and the average father 15 minutes…to waste much of that time finding fault is really first class foolishness.

Children are a sponge and they are constantly absorbing what we spread around to be absorbed. They listen to loves and our hates and our angers and our prejudices.

They learn how we really feel about God because they watch how importantly we treat his commandments. Or not.

The Bible teaches what is right and wrong but they are watching you and me and they are learning how we feel about these teachings by what we do or do not do.

They regularly attend the University of Mom and Dad and grand mother and grand father. He was just a young boy but he was already working long hours in a factory in Naples. He had a dream and that dream was to be a singer. When he was 10 years old he took his first lesson. His teacher told his mother she was wasting her money.

“His voice sounds like the wind blowing through shutters.”

But the little boy’s mother had faith in her son and she shared his dream and is dream became their dream. And she taught him the monumental lesson of never giving up.

And her understanding of him, her confidence in him, paid off and the world had an Enrico Caruso.

Few parents have a child who will become an Enrico Caruso but what a gift to give to a child, the gift of faith in he or she.

“I believe in you son. I will support your dreams daughter. I will walk with you and stumble with you and leave no doubt in your mind that my prayers for you are often.”

Edit these words TO FIT YOUR OWN CIRCUMSTANCE but give something like them to your child…and the angels will sing an extra stanza and the stars will give an extra twinkle in reply.

Late evening

Naked we come into this world. Then clothed with time, we live, until the garment, all used up, send us from this world as naked as when we entered.

Is that why it is sometimes referred to as the thread of life.

How is your garment of tenure, Tom? And your relationship with the garment maker?

You only get one garment, Tom. One to see you to the end. Is yours wrinkled with regrets?

Morning

I took a close look at Jesus today. I haven’t done that in so long I can’t remember when. Jesus of the open road. Jesus of the seamless garment and the single goal. Jesus who understands the rich man, the poor man, the sick man, the dying man, all men and women. The Jesus who does not condemn.

I have come so far. I have so far to go.

Evening

I like sunsets. No, I need sunsets. I need that flood of color that, soon muted, fades to black. I need that evening star bright and strong and alone. I need that far-away beyond to meld with now, for I am “a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

And I need everything and anything that helps me to remember that I was made by choice and not by chance.

Morning

I have neither the ability nor inclination for perfection, but I admit it is time to stop playing King of the Mountain and accept you, God, as King of the Universe. Am I ready to pray for change? I want no set of wings, no halo even slightly off-center. That would make people nervous. What I want is just a theological swerve and a commitment to that new direction.

I have not been happy hiding from heaven but am I really ready for a new address for my soul?

Afternoon

God opened His jewelry store last night and set the content out to sparkle in the morning sun. I know the snow will grow dirty and dismal, but now, pristine and pure, unsullied ty bire tracks and shovels, not yet a footprint to be seen, it glistens.

Heaven must be like this, and more. All light and crispness and wonder.

Life is what we are alive to. For some, life is only shifty deals and a fast buck. It is all they are alive to.

For some, life is only backyard gossip, petty fights, and boredom in the suburbs. It is all they are alive to. For some life is an ongoing ego trip.

For some, life is accepting the challenge of betterment and working at making their selves just that. Not perfect but certainly better than they were yesterday.
Which begs the question, what is your life alive to? In the private recesses of your mind and soul, what turns you on or turns you off?

It is one of my favorite quotes and I wish I knew who wrote it.
“Within my earthly temple there’s a crowd,
There’s one of us that’s humble, one that’s proud.
There’s one that’s broken-hearted for his sins,
There’s one who unrepentant sits and grins;
There’s one who loves his neighbor as he loves himself.
There’s one who cares for naught but fame and self.
From such corroding care I should be free,
If once I could determine which is me.

What was our scripture for this morning? “It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth and behold he eateth but he awaketh and his soul is empty.” (Isaiah 23:8)
