SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING (continuation of Serialization of book)

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

************************************
This book was published in 1996 and has been read by and still fills thousands of libraries.  I am now making it available for you my friends of this blog.  From time to time used copies are available on amazon.com

More thoughts  guaranteed to make you seem younger and feel younger.

5. Be A Survivor

Don’t let hard times get you down.  Let them be learning experiences.  Know that up always follows down.  Remember, there are  people who have survived shipwrecks ad concentration camps.  Be a cork; pop to the surface, ride out the storms of life.  Learn how to turn what at first seems to be finish lines into starting lines.  It is, indeed, not how hard you hit bottom but how high you bounce.

  1. Accept your importance

When you are praised, a simple thank you does quite nicely.  Don’t let yourself get into the habit of replying, “it was nothing…anyone could have done it.”  In other words, don’t rain on your own parade.

  1. Cultivate a good sense of humor

Be able to laugh at yourself rather than at others.  Winston Churchill, when asked if he was thrilled by the large audiences that showed up to hear him speak, replied, “I am quite flattered, but then I remind myself that twice as many would show up to see me hanged.”

Or, perhaps be like the man who found himself stuck with a warehouse full of canned white salmon.

Housewives would not buy it because they were used to pink salmon. He then got the inspired idea to advertise:  Snow white Alaska salmon.  Guaranteed not to turn pink in the can.

  1. Learn not to be pushy

Ever tried to push a piece of string?  It didn’t go anywhere did it?  Pull it and it will follow you to the ends of the earth. Are there family members or friends you would like to see go in other directions?  Move them by example.  And if that doesn’t work, at least one person will be doing what you think is important, you.

“Do you enjoy visiting friends? More than likely you’re thinking, Preacher, of course, I do.

Now let me ask the other side of the coin - Do you enjoy visiting enemies? No?

Well, I know you must enjoy visiting at least one enemy because, like myself, you probably visit this one quite often. Unfortunately, we all …visit this enemy…whose name is anger.

Some visit anger seldom . Some on a regular basis. And during those visits, some spew and others stew.

TWO JOLLY COMPASSIONATE GIANTS CALLED LOVE AND FORGIVENESS (Replacement ofyesterdays (Thursdays) blog that was erased)

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

The Serialization of RUST ON MY SOUL is added to each TUESDAY Go back to April 13th and start the Series.

Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like it:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
(Matthew 22:37-39).

Early in my Christian thinking about this phrase, I want you to consider a few people who are human  giants because they’ve done just that, loved and forgiven beyond normal human behavior…lived tall and-sun crowned above the crowd.

These were not just midget moments when someone merely prayed or talked about these two giant emotions, but magic moments when they put them into total practice…and when they did…I think maybe the world wobbled on its axis…it was that mind boggling.

It always is.

And all of these stories below are true stories.  They really happened.

Quite likely many of you have seen the movie THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.

This story which might be called the miracle on the River Kwai was not included in the movie,
but it did happen in the real life story.

It happened in the south Pacific during World War II.  The Japanese forced their Scottish prisoners to labor night and day building a jungle railroad bridge.

As the bridge grew, the bodies of the Scottish soldiers shrank until they were nothing but skin and bones.

One day the Japanese Commandant began to scream at them that a shovel was missing and that if it wasn’t immediately returned he would kill them all on the spot.
No one budged and the Japanese commandant pulled out his gun.

It was obvious he was going to carry out his threat.

At that moment one man stepped forward and confessed.

The Commandant promptly beat him too death with a shovel.
When it was over, the survivors picked up the bloody corpse of their fellow prisoner and carried him with them to the second tool check.

This time, no shovel was missing.
Indeed, no shovel had ever been missing.
There had been a miscount at the first check point. The word spread like wildfire.
An innocent man had willingly given his life to
save the others.

The incident had a profound effect.

The prisoners began to treat each other like brothers.

When the victorious Allies swept in, the Scottish survivors lined up in front of their former captors and instead of attacking them insisted that there would be, “No more hatred.  No more killing.  Now what we ALL need is forgiveness.

STARTED SUNDAY MARCH 5, 2011 Serialization of another book SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING

This book, SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING, is about dealing positively with the challenges of getting older and fosters the belief  that “If we would have new knowledge, we must get a world of new questions.”  (Susanne K. Langer)

MANY OF THE SUGGESTIONS IN THIS BOOK ARE GOOD FOR IMPROVING ONE’S LIFE AT ANY AGE

“I am come that they (you) may have life and have it to the full.  (John 10:10)

Anyone who lives long enough gets older.  There are no other options.  How we handle the adventure is filled with options.

Keep both eyes on life, and not on the calendar.  Admit your age, but don’t admit to the fallacy that you have to act like it.  Saying, “I’m 39 and holding,” is more tragic than humorous because it argues that age has no attributes.

V. Neil Wyrick

Below a quote from it…

“Be like the farmer who, when asked what he was building, replied, “if I can rent it, it’s a rustic cottage.  If I can’t, it’s a cow shed.”

It’s called attitude and it can make us prematurely old or longer young.  For truly, things aren’t just what they are, but rather how we choose to see them.”

God suffers us, endures us! And forgives us and loves us and sets such a perfect example for us.

Sometimes the best thing do, if depression descends on you, is for a little while to try to wipe clean the slate of your worried mind.  To give such thoughts some muted silence.  Seek an emotional whiteout.  Just let the soft breeze of nothingness blow for a while.  And then, read John 14:27 and hear Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

“Do you enjoy visiting friends? More than likely you’re thinking, Preacher, of course, I do.

RUST ON MY SOUL (57th in series)

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND

************************************

The Serialization of RUST ON MY SOUL is added to each TUESDAY Go back to April 13th and start the Series.
************************************

RUST ON MY SOUL (A Novel) (Published by Bridge Press in 1985 & Distributed Internationally) (A new Series that began on Tues April 13th and will continue every Tuesday thereafter until finished) (Thursday & Sunday will continue to cover a variety of subjects as in the past)

INTRODUCTION (Repeated for those new to the series)

In an old loose leaf notebook, Thomas Kettering wrote when there was a cry from his heart. He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step.

Morning

What is so good about being bad?  Why have we elevated low behavior to such a shining place in the sky?  Why is morality called mundane and immorality marvelous?

If sin is so great why does it ruin so many lives?  The devil really puts out good PR and gets a lot of free advertising.  The Hollywood rating “R” should often stand for Raunchy, and even “Pg” for Pretty Gross.  Maybe it’s the costuming – horns vs. halos.  Maybe it’s the musical score – hymns vs. punk rock.  Maybe it’s the locale, though fiery flames would seem to lose out next to heavenly light.  Maybe it’s the facial expressions – saintly smiles vs. smirks and sneers.

Whatever is the reason, good and God do get a lot of bad press.

Night

It’s 11:15 P.M. and the contriteness that stuck in my throat all evening is finally out.  I pushed at my vocal chords with prayer  I worked with all my might as massaging my stubbornness into mush  And finally the words, “I’m sorry” came wheezing out battling their release to the very end.  I said it and I actually meant it.  I admitted I was wrong and never even built a bridge of excuses to assuage my anger.

In the past, anger for me was a weeklong binge. A charcoal fire, pulsing red and hot, charring the inner man and making the outer man react with anger.  Now it’s down to four hours of pouting.

“It sounds like I’ve still got a long ways to go, doesn’t it Lord, but hey…I sure have come a long ways as well.

Evening

I don’t know why there is so much wonder about the possibility of a visitor from outer space.  It’s already happened.  Jesus certainly came from beyond – out there –infinite infinity.  You can’t put together a journey much greater in distance or in mysterious abundance than a Son of God come down to earth.

 To be continued next Tuesday

SIXTY PLUS AND NOT HOLDING (continuation of Serialization of book) THE TREMENDOUS TWELVE..PLUS ONE

If you would like to share this blog with a friend, go to the bottom and click on the TELL A FRIEND
************************************
This book was published in 1996 and has been read by and still fills thousands of libraries.  I am now making it available for you my friends of this blog.  From time to time used copies are available on amazon.com

BELOW IS 60 PLUS PIECE FOR SUNDAY APRIL 17 (how much better is worse?) 2011 INPUTTING IT TO MY BLOG NOW
ACTION
“The mental of physical process of movement and change”

“…Therefore, prepare your minds for action, be self-controlled…”

THE TREMENDOUS TWELVE...PLUS ONE

There are definitely positive practices that can make life better rather than just talking about it.  Don’t worry about some unknown future, instead work to solve problems that actually exist.  The great French philosopher Montaigne said, “My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened.”

And speaking of what is going on in your mind…

The following thoughts are guaranteed to make you seem younger and feel younger.

1.  Find someone to love

Giving love really is as important as receiving it.  A parent.  A child.  A pet to pamer.  A neighbor in need. A friend.  And don’t just find a friend, be one…

And wherever or whoever…all relationship would be better if handled with an open hand rather than a taking paw.

2. Find something to look forward to

Weight to lose, a book to read, music to listen to, a tree to prune, some goal to achieve.  A baseball or football game to go to.  A new food to sample, a new skill to learn, a new idea to pursue.

And don’t just set goals, rather have a mission.  Otherwise, you may become like the Japanese Kamakazi pilot in World War II, who flew 173 missions.
3. Find a challenge

Preferably more than one.  Don’t look for the easy out.  Don’t seek only people who agree with you.  Don’t be like Hume in Paris who wrote of eating nothing but ambrosia, drinking nothing but nectar, trodding on nothing but flowers, breathing nothing but perfume – and being totally bored.

Remember that life is like a see saw, a lot of ups and downs.  It is what makes a see saw interesting.  It is what makes life interesting.

4. Share yourself

With friends, family and, yes, even strangers, share that wonderful complex creation called you.  Try to start every hello with a smile.  Don’t bottle up  your enthusiasms.  Give vent to your hopes.  Run the flags of your dreams up a long line of flagpoles.  You’ll be amazed at how often even a strangers will salute.
