Matthew 16:13-16 KJV

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?  And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist:  some, Elias; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

A man worked as a signalman by the sea, giving important signals to the ships as they moved into the narrow harbor.  On one storm-seeking night, a ship split open on craggy rocks because the Captain could not see his signals.

There was in inquiry because they wanted to know how the accident happened.  The judge asked the signalman, “Were you on duty that night?”

“Yes, sir, I was.”
“Did you have your lamps with you?” Again he answered, yes, and he showed them the

lamps.

“Did you give them the right warnings? Did you wave the lamps?” Yes was his answer to both questions.  And after a few more questions, the man was excused and left the courtroom.

When he reached home, he told his friend, “I’m just glad that the judge didn’t ask me if my lamps were lighted.”

Who are you and are you the best man or woman for the job?  For the job of becoming a child of God whom men will praise and God will be pleased with.  It’s called personal destiny and no one else has your particular, peculiar opportunities or talents.  No one in the world can be what you can be.  YOU…each of you…are one of a kind.

Who are you? Well, how does that scripture in Genesis describe us:

God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

When we first meet someone, one of their first questions, no matter how it is put, is essentially, “Who are you?” And your first reply probably has something to do with what you do to put food on the table.  Because what we do for a living is most often how the world sees us.

If I were doing the questioning and were to ask you, “Whose are you?” you would probably have to pause a minute, trying to figure out just where I was coming from.  Did I mean are you married and to whom?  Did I mean who were your parents?

Well, that’s getting close, for this morning if I were to ask each of you that question, the answer I would really be looking for is -

“I am the Lord’s child.”  For first and foremost, you are God’s creation and He is your heavenly Father.  That is who you are.

We humans forget this sometimes.  Well, if not forget, at least behave as if we have forgotten it.  For yes, there are far too many times when we act like recalcitrant adult babies; fighting and feuding in the million and one ways we have learned how to negatively act and react.  However, that does not negate the fact that we are God’s children and need to try harder to

act like it.

Who are you?  You were meant to be a light unto the world.  Living the kind of life that does not   promote chaos and darkness.  Living the kind of life that is not a disease that infects those around you with greed, or selfishness, or bad temper, or any of the other negative ways of living that we human beings can fall heir to.

In a Peanuts cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.

“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.

And it’s your fault!”

Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”

To which she declares, “You’re my friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”

In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more complicated.

A 16th century Jacobean poet and preacher, John Donne (1572-1631), is credited with writing “No man is an island unto himself.”

And indeed, we are not islands unto ourselves.  We do influence all the currents that flow toward and around all those other islands.  So we owe it to our families and friends and all the unknown strangers who watch our daily actions, to influence them toward good rather than evil; toward God rather than godlessness.

Does this thought overwhelm you?  You don’t feel you’re up to this kind of challenge?

Well, the Bible tells you that you are indeed your brother’s keeper.  And overwhelmed or not…it is your heritage as a Christian.  It is repayment for the gift of life.  Forgiven when you do not accept it…but blessed when you do.

Who are you?  Whose are you?

You may refuse to accept the responsibility of being your brothers’ guide as they watch what you do and where you do go, and follow where you lead.

But refuse or not.  Accept or not.  You are your heavenly Father’s child and as a member of the great family of creation… everything you do or leave undone cannot be ignored.

Let’s put it this way.  The moon reflects the light from the brightness of the sun unless the world gets in the way and a total eclipse makes it impossible.  And like the moon, we reflect the brightness of the Son of God, unless the world and all its temptations get in the way.

I think that James, the brother of Jesus, had a great idea.  In his letter to the early church, he wrote...

“The wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.” (James3:17f)

That’s good advice to the all of us: plant peacekeeping seeds and enjoy the only kind of harvest such actions can produce.

And in Romans 12:2 another solution is explained this way ". . . be transformed by the renewing of your mind."   In short, no excuses allowed, change your thinking, improve your patience and your peacemaking ability.

If you were not born a natural Peacemaker but would like to join their ranks, pick the path that suits you best, and take it.  And if you try one and it doesn’t work, try another.  But don’t quit!  For whether it is person to person or country to country, there is a real and definite need for Peacemakers.

HOW TO DEAL WITH CONFLICTS

A rather crude and cruel experiment was carried out by Emperor Frederick, who ruled the Roman Empire in the thirteenth century.

He wanted to know what man’s original language was: Hebrew, Greek, or Latin? He decided to isolate a few infants from the sound of the human voice.

He reasoned that they would eventually speak the natural tongue of man.

Wet nurses who were sworn to absolute silence were obtained, and though it was difficult for them, they abided by the rule.

The infants never heard a word -- not a sound from a human voice. Within several months they were all dead.

We need relationships...we do not need conflicts that destroy relationships...in any language.

Therefore what must we all do and always...is...follow some basic rules that common sense and the Bible have laid out for us...for after all we are brothers and sisters in Christ...and if we act like it...half the battle is won.

       To begin with...

If we hear a tainted tale about someone don't spread it...rather...

        THINK...spelled

T...is it true?

H...is it helpful?

I...is it inspiring?

N...is it necessary that we spread the story?

K...is it kind?

Their names were James and Paul and they could hardly have been any more different in their thinking.

They both loved the Lord...after that it was all downhill.

Then they did what all followers of Christ ought to always automatically do...as brothers in Christ they agreed to magnify what they had in common rather than what they disagreed on.

They could have enlarged their anger and destroyed their common sense. ...but they didn't.
In Jerusalem there was much more pressure to conform to the laws of Moses than in Antioch.

In a Gentile city, people came to Christ from a different perspective and tradition.
So what did these men of God do?

They let each congregation work out its own practices according to the principles of Christ’s grace, love and truth as each saw it.

And so they prospered and their churches prospered...as consensus won out over conflict.

Again...what did they do?... they agreed to magnify what they had in common rather than what they disagreed on.

What do you want from Jesus?  Let me share with you what I believe you should want.

You should want Him to shake you up enough so that three things happen:

first - that you finally believe He can

change you,

secondly – that you want to change,

and

third - that you accept the forgiveness

that He freely offers.  The number of people who believe in His forgiveness but can’t accept this fact is legion.

ARE YOU A PEACEMAKER OR A PEACEBREAKER?

As our scripture reads “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

What shall you be called if you are a Peace-breaker?

Well, Proverbs 14:17 gives a pretty good reason to be a Peacemaker rather than Peacebreaker … "A quick-tempered man does foolish things."  And who wants to be called an angry fool?

With such careless ease we say, “I lost my temper.”  But have you ever stopped to think of the implications behind that phrase.  Lose it often enough and the results can be disastrous; for that is the way people lose their spouses and jobs and health and opportunities and...the list is long.

Some very educated people claim that venting our anger, in controlled circumstances of course, is a satisfactory method to finding and keeping our “cool.”  But I tend to agree more with Neil Warren, who in his book, “Make Anger Your Ally,” suggests that people ought to sit down and think about the things that make them angry, and then write them down.  Certainly not act them out.

Read what you’ve written once a week for six months and during that time, keep asking yourself these probing questions: “Do I enjoy getting angry?  Do I actually enjoy intimidating people?”

And if you get what you want, there is another question you must seriously ask yourself:  But at what a cost?  At what a cost!

If you’re thinking six months for at least some improvement! That’s too long a time – Do this...and you'll dilly and dally until your vow or your dream or your goal or your mission will have died from unuse.

You should want results sooner than that!  No, that is not too long a time, for most of our bad, angry habits took a long time growing and they will probably take a long time to shrink.

One thing is for sure, if you are an angry person and you don't, or won't, admit it, you certainly are not going to do anything about it to improve.

ARROGANCE AND HUMILITY (Continuation of Series)

If you were asked, "What is the most important discovery or accomplishment in your life? " how would you answer the question?

In the year 1847, a doctor from Edinburgh, Sir James Simpson, discovered that chloroform could be used as an anesthetic to render people insensible to the pain of surgery.

From those early experiments, Dr. Simpson made it possible for people to go through the most dangerous operations without fear of pain and suffering.  His was one of the most significant discoveries of modern medicine.

But some years later, while lecturing at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Simpson was asked by one of his students, "What do you consider to be the most valuable discovery of your lifetime? "

To the surprise of his students, who had expected him to refer to chloroform, Dr. Simpson replied, "My most valuable discovery was when I discovered myself a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Saviour."

What great a favor humility can do to and for society.  How?  It encourages co-operation and respect for other human beings.

A prime example of a humble person is Nelson Mandela. This was a man who suffered almost 30 years of imprisonment for the cause he supported.

On his elevation to the Presidency of South Africa in 1994, Mandela said, "I stand before you filled with deep pride and joy:  pride in the ordinary, humble people of this country - you have shown such a calm, patient determination to reclaim this country as your own; and joy that we can loudly proclaim from the rooftops - Free at last!"

This speech was absolutely filled with humility.  Words spoken by a man who thought only of the people;  fought beside them, shared their fate and did not seek to rise above them, but stayed one of them.

Mandela's humility brought him world-wide acclaim; placing him alongside the likes of Mother Theresa and Ghandi.

Humility shakes the hands of the homeless rather than cast in his or her direction a look of disdain.

Allow me to ask a question, please.  When and if  homeless man or woman comes to  your worship service on a Sunday morn, and then goes back to the Fellowship Hall afterwards to join for lunch.

Do you walk over and give a verbal welcome?   Or shake his or her hand?

Or do you just gravitate to friends - the old comfort zone, you know?

Ah yes, it’s well to remember the story about the little girl who questioned her wealthy father praying to God to help his neighbor by saying, "But daddy, you can help himself yourself."

Humility practices the compassion of listening, even to a fool.  And if his comments are not hurting anyone, allowing him to walk away feeling he is wise.

Humility is not easily practiced nor easily kept for pride constantly looks for an opportunity to stamp on it and crush it into the ground.  But seek it consistently for without it there is the chance you will become a slave to your pride.  And in so doing, become a consummate bore with a prickly presence.
